if you do a file search and when it asks you to type in the name of the file type in *.* (star, dot, star) it will list every file on the computer. Once finished click to sort into size order and see which of the big ones can be deleted (be careful)

Running a disk defragger might free up a fair bit of space if the machine is old and been running a while. You will find one in Computer Management.

They could be backup files created by system restore, I think you can decrease the frequency of backups or the amount of space allocated to them, depending what version of windows you are running.

How much is in c:\temp and c:\windows\temp ?

What is the PC used for (if you don't mind me asking), a lot of disc burning software or video conversions add another image of the file to the hard drive when you run them

The computer is used for very little, which is why I was surprised to see 44gig taken up.He has copied a few DVDs in the past so my guess is that the copying programme has kept image files

Go to start and run then in the box type %temp% click ok, every file you see is a temp file and can be deleted. Its not going to be system restore as even on its maximum setting it cant use more than 12% of the drive.
Also if your searching for files you need to make sure all files are visible, if these are system files gone bad they wont show when you search.
The DVD image files are definately what its going to be each file when you copy is 4gb, open the recording software and somewhere under settings you should have a temp location while recording.
