bout £55 a month for now, but can reduce the minutes down now so should be about £35 soon. Dont use it to ring anyone hardly and the odd text only.

Sony Ericsson w880 or similar are categorically the worst phones ever made. This is the truth - I know of 6 others who had them apart from me, and it cuts you off mid call because it keeps losing the network signal!!!! Especially irritating if you've just waited five minutes for some twat to answer after you've been placed in a queue. It's not a network problem either, cos our lass's phone had the same network and never did that!!!

I've got a Nokia 6220 now, it has free sat nav on it if you're into that type of thing, a 1GB memory stick and a 5.1 megapixel camera. All round good phone, up to now the besyt one I've had.

I worked for orange retentions department while at Uni. I can honestly say I never once soiled my pants when someone told me they were leaving.

Not one complaint so far.

go to http://www.thebestphonedeals.co.uk (this is my website, not sure if im allowed to plug it but hey its worth a shot) and they have them all there ready to compare along with all the best current deals from around the web. personally i would choose nokia every single time. you may also be best to get a new contract altogether and port your number rather than upgrade as the best deals are normally reserved for new customers.

I have the Nokia N95 Black. You cant go wrong. Its wifi, 3G, Bluetooth etc.... Mind I think the N96 is out now and its a bit slimmer. Other than that i'd have the 3G Iphone.

chris i wouldnt go within a million miles of the n95, a phone rushed out by nokia to compete with the ipod and beset with problems ever since.

nokia were in here last week with the n96 and its an altogether better phone.

ultimately you have to remember the better the handset, the more it costs, and the more your provider is going to be charging you for your plan. if you go for a 400/500 bar handset like the n96 or the samsung f490 you may have to pay towards it if you are on a lower tariff.

ultimately your first priority should be asking yourself do you actually need a new handset ? my contract was up yesterday and because my handset is still in decent nick i went for a sim only deal with o2. for 20 quid a month i get 600 anytime any network minutes, 1000 texts and a free choice of bolt on. the options for the bolt on were unlimited texts, unlimited o2 to o2 cals, free weekend calls, free calls to landlines, or unlimited internet.

i went for unlimited net so ive got that plus 600 mins and 1000 texts for 20 quid a month. okay i dont get a new handset but im only on a 30 day contract. if my phone packs in i can either upgrade then or go and buy a good little handset like the 6300 for 60 quid from a store.

if you are going to commit for another 18 months and get a handset you have to look at what you need from your phone. do you need one with a 5 megapixel camera, do you need one with a lot of inbuilt memory or a memory stick. do you need 3g coverage, do you need something with quad band, are you using the handset for gaming/emailing. do you need a long battery life/standby time ?

you also need to decide which network you are going to be on as some handsets like the n75 and iphone are exclusive to certain networks.

perhaps you just want a handset that looks good as you are a bit of a poser. whatever you decide you are stuck with it for 18 months so i would reccomend a handset that has been released in the last few months.

once you have answered those questions i will reccomend a couple of handsets.

Thanks for your reply SP.

I don't *need* a new handset but I'm currently using a Samsung C300 which I bought from Argos for 20 quid as my last one got battered half way through the contract. It's generally pretty shit and won't last me long.

I am going to ring Orange, threaten to cancel as I have seen Three's deal of 750 minutes, unlimited texts and a Samsung U900 for 25 quid a month through their website and also get 62.50 through Quidco. I'm hoping that they will then offer me a similar deal but with a decent phone. I understand that the better phone I get then the more I may have to pay but I won't be paying anthing for my handset so will only take a free one.

I'm not too fussed on the camera, want decent memory, good internet use and GPRS.

I am probably asking the world given I'm not prepared to pay much monthly but if you don't ask...

If you're going to get something for free, you might as well get something pretty decent.

the thing with 3 is that they have to offer more minutes and texts because their network coverage is crap. there isnt much point having loads of minutes and texts if you cant get a signal.

like everyone else, even npower, orange will have a retentions team whose job it is to keep you. they have a pot of money allocated to them and can spend it on keeping the customer. they may not be able to match 3 but its deffo worth a try.

you do need to be careful as orange will know exactly what deals 3 have at any given time so dont get carried away.

they will also ask you what handset 3 have offered so be prepared to ask for the handset you want.

you will almost certainly be better off upgrading instore rather than over the phone, as the stores have more money allocated to them when it comes to upgrades.

is there a particular brand you prefer using eg sony, samsung, nokia etc ?

I have no intention of using 3 as I know they're shit but its the best deal I could find that I want beating.

Not bothered about the brand. Just want a decent phone, with trillions of texts to keep me sane at work and about 10 minutes a day phone calls

you dont get the handset for nowt. thats all part of the con.

the adviser has a pot of money he can spend on each customer. the more expensive the handset the longer the contract, the higher the tariff, the less minutes and texts the customer can have.

in addition each customer is given a rating based on past usage. the more money the customer has historically spent the more important it is to keep them. if you regularly go over your monthly allowance and run up big bills you are like gold-dust and they will bend over backwards to keep you.

if you are like me and have never ever had a bill over 20 bar then theres no way they are going to give me a 500 bar handset on an 18 month deal. they would go bankrupt.

i can get you a new samsung 490 ( tocco ) for 200 bar if you want one. you could then go on a 30 day contract, sim only, and get unlimited texts and a fair wedge of minutes for 20 bar a month

my average bill has been 45 quid over the last 18 months so i expect them to want to retain me.

i'm aware of the sim only deals but having read the 'orange retention deals' thread on Martin Lewis's moneysavingexpert.com forum, I fully expect to be offered a similar deal to the Sim only packages but with a decent handset.

A company that gives you money for doing fuck all. If you ever buy anything online, switch suppliers, set up a contract through them they give you a percentage or lump sum back. I've had about 550 quid back from them in 12 months from stuff I would have bought/taken out anyway.

ie, switch Gas and Electric suppliers you'll get about 50-70 quid in your bank in about 8-12 weeks
home insurance anything up to 120 quid
car insurance about 40 quid
buy a tele from dixons, 5% back.

Free money.

There is no catch (not one I have seen in 12 months anyway), I have also recommended it to loads of people and they have seen no catch either.

the 'catch' is you pay a 5 pound a year fee which is taken from your earnings. well worth it. i have earned 110 in the last two month just buying house insurance and swapping gas and leccy provider (which i was going to do anyway). takes a good few weeks to get the cash back in your bank account but its well worth it
