I am the proud owner of a vodafone 3g mobile broadband usb stick. I've just ran a speed test here http://resources.zdnet.co.uk/speedtest/ and got the result of just over 4mb's per second. This is pretty damn impressive for what is essentially a mobile phone connection.

The main suppliers monopoly is now over as are the days of having to pay line rental for a phone line you never use are past. Guess who will never have a landline again.

Theres a 5gb limit per month by the way so if you download shit loads of fillums then forget it. Mind you, if you do that you're going to get caught up in the 'fair usage policy' of your isp anyway.

Might I suggest that you go read your terms and conditions.

Hmmmm, can you have two computers connecting via the same account/dongle.

We use the t-mobile usb dongles at work, we'll I don't use one, but I support them, kind of.

My problem is Sky, we have Sky + at home, which is a fantastic service, but it needs a landline apparently, because we have Sky + and Sky Sports, we get free Sky Broadband. The bill at the end of the month is quite large, but we'd be lost without it all.

In the list of things which would need to go to save money, I can honestly say tv channels and internet connections are not at the top of the hit list.

If I wasn't on holiday, pre-season tournaments would have been!

I may be completely wrong here, but I thought the Sky+ landline was only used for the initial setup, for firmware downloads and for Sky Box Office - ours is never plugged in unless we want to order something.

When my daughter wants to use her laptop at my place, I network them so she can share the connection.

I know it would continue to work in the short term, but what would be the consequences of taking the bt line out?

I'm sure it says in the Sky T&C's that you must have a landline and you must have your box connected.

they eventually click on - believe me!! They pestered the life out of me until they threatened to stop the service unless the box was reconnected to the line. Mind you this was because we had multi-room,the terms of which demand that all boxes are connected to the phone line at all times - this may not apply to a single room subscription box once the initial year is up.

Sky multi room?

My Sky+ is in the living room, the other box is at our lasses 25 miles away. Both work fine and have done for a year.

I'm 99% certain that after 1 year you don't need the phone line plugged in to comply with the Terms and Conditions.

The phone line doesn't affect the operation of the digibox, but Sky will send a signal to the box in the middle of the night from time to time, which triggers a free phone call which confirms to Sky that you are complying with the contract and have the phone line plugged in.

They are so bothered about it because the 'Red button' votes and Box Office purchases make them a lot of money but can't be done without the phone line.

Then again, I've had mine for over a year and once the installation engineer went, I unplugged the phone line and that's how it's stayed - but no letter.

Leave it unplugged until you get the warning letter I reckon!

Yep you only need it connected to the phone line for the first year to comply with the ts & cs - after that you can disconnect.
