Can anyone tell me why...

...all these power packs that plug straight into the mains, for charging mobile phones etc., always have the lead coming out of THE WRONG END OF THE device? Why does the lead come out of the top when every normal plug has it coming out of the bottom?

Come on now, there must be some technical justification for this. No one can be that stupid deliberately. If you want to plug such a device into a socket block (e.g., one of those wind-up extensions with four sockets built into the reel) and there's already something plugged, in just forget it. It won't fit! :evil:

they're that way because sockets are usually next to the floor and you normally have things like mobiles and laptops up on a desk, makes more sense to have the wire coming from the top

Whereas the radio, TV, table lamps, and other appliances are strewn around the floor, right?

Not good enough. If that's the answer then plugs should have the wires coming out the top too!

Spender had it right. they have changed the stuff to our kind of plug and not the two prong thing. the 2 prong thing doesnt have the issue of it being at the top or bottom does it.

TV's need to be trailed along the floor as you often need to be round the back of them, if they went up first then there'd be a tripping hazard. Also they tend to have stronger wires as they're generally less portable than other things. Mobile chargers have to be portable and therefore have thinner wires to reduce messing about when carrying them, they wouldn't be able to be folded double whenever they get plugged in as they wear out more easily so a top mounted wire is easier.

Not that I'm defending this type of malarkey, I hate it when you try to use a 4 way plug facing adapter
