8 GCSE's (A-C)

A levels in History and Geography then I went and got a job.

Can't say they've been any use to me since!

Not worth the paper they're written on nowadays... with the ridiculously high pass rate, it tells you the whole thing is a huge back slapping exercise to make everyone feel good from government, to schools, to pupils, everyones a winner.....

Too late in life I've realised that qualifications are secondary to the will to actually succeed in life....

On my CV I've always had 7 in a variety of subjects. Truth is I don't have a single one and nobody has ever asked to see the bits of paper.

So to interpret your answer to the question, you've got none?

If you went to Manor then you did well to get 2!

I'd bet that you were probably in the top 5% of your year with those results.

It depends on your career path. If you are applying for university they'll want to see them but any few companies will ask. As time moves on it becomes less and less relevant. Once you get past about 22/23 they aren't even a subject for discussion.

Weird things, 'O' levels. My end of term exam results throughout school were complete non-events, yet when I got my 'O'level results I got 8 passes. I didn't do significantly more revision. The only difference was they were marked by external examiners.

By the time I got my results tho I'd already decided to get out and get a job, which I did, tho after a while I did A levels at night class and went off to Uni

I've got plenty of qualifications, though I've never once been asked to prove it.
I've used maybe about 20% of what I learnt to get my GCEs.
For the university stuff it's FAR less than 20%.
So I tend to agree with the "they are irrelevant" brigade, with the proviso that you have proved your competence by excelling at your job (or whatever else you might have used the qualifications for if you had them).

I've never really associated learning things with getting jobs. Sometimes occurs to me that if I'd done things differently I could now have a lucrative career, but the penalty for that would be not to have had the other life-things I've had, even tho these are probably worth nothing to anyone else

What's the asterisk for?

Is it to refer you to the small print that says you sat them when New Labour had dumbed them down for political purposes?

Nearly 39

It's a fact, not every man and his dog went to 'Uni' as they are loosely termed now

I don't think they do A* A levels, just A* GCSEs.
The reason for this is that they dumbed down, or at least changed the grading system, so that more kids could leave school with a certificate. They then realised that employers and universities couldn't distinguish between people who'd done well academically and people who hadn't, so they introduced A*s. So now everyone knows what's what and everyone has a leaving certificate

What governments seem unable to see is that not everyone is/wants to be academic. It's an admission also that governments believe that non-academics are stupid and that what they REALLY want is an academic certificate

As much as some folk on here would find it hard to believe, seeing as though I only look about 25, I'm 34!

A good proportion of my mates from school went to 6th form and practically all of them then went on to "Uni". I think that it was probably in the years between you and I being at school that it started to change.

In any case, I didn't mean to cast aspersions on the old polys, because many of them were excellent for science and technology. Just that, when they became 'universities' they lost a lot of that and took on quasi-academic stuff like media studies.

By the way, a friend of the bairn's is doing a degree in brewing at Edinburgh. Now there's a course for you

Lincoln wasn't even built when I started in '92. I think it opened just before I left.

Hull certainly changes rapidly, then, doesn't it. When I lived there, I went round a lot with students from the College of Architecture, which seems now to have been wiped off the face of the earth. Can't even find any references to it on Friends Reunited!

When was that?

And whereabouts in Ull was it?
