For sure, Nairac was a touch before my time but he was well known within the old school of the South Det as a bit beyond that line between brave and foolish. I've been in one or two sticky situations but some of the ops he was on beggar belief.

As for the Kingsmill thing (Miami Showband as you referred to it) I can't say with any certainty as I wasn't involved (usually a good test of these sorts of things) but as far as I know it was an op that went bad and Nairac wasn't on the ground at the time. The bad lads that day were the UVF not 14 Int. The whole ethos of the Det was surveillance, when it went hot it was usually due to the SAS being involved (and usually cocking the job up). Any op that had been planned like that, and I don't deny it's possible, would not have been coordinated by 14 Int.

NB: Robert Nairac was 14 Intelligence Company aka 'The Det'. He was not SAS as is being reported.

The surviving band members both claimed there was an English Officer with the UVF men at the time, and one later identified him as Robert Nairac. I suppose we'll never know.
