Hartlepool pensioner Fred Harrison nurses his broken wrist at home, which was broken by a rocket shot from Manchester United’s Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo

A pensioner ended up in hospital with a broken wrist – after trying to stop a rocket shot from football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Middlesbrough fan Fred Harrison, 68, from the West Park area of Hartlepool, was at the Riverside Stadium last Sunday for his team's Premier League clash with leaders Manchester United. Sitting just three rows from the front in the stadium's North Stand, Fred had to show quick reactions when a miscued strike from the Portuguese wing wizard in the opening minutes of the game headed straight towards him.

The former Hartlepool Borough Council worker pulled off a save which Boro goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer would have been proud of – but broke his wrist in the process. The granddad-of-six said: "As soon as it left Ronaldo's foot, I could see where it was going. "I had my glasses on, so I automatically put my hands up. "It was a great save which probably Mark Schwarzer couldn't even match but it was hit so hard it broke my wrist."

Fred, who was at the game with 40-year-old son Kevin, added: "He must have been getting his angles sorted because he scored shortly after but he didn't half hit it. "It didn't really hurt at first and it didn't bother me. "It was a good match so I think I was too busy watching it to think about any pain. "It was only when I got home it started to hurt and began to swell up."

Despite his wife, Edith, 68, urging him to go and have his injury checked out, Fred waited until Tuesday morning before going to the University Hospital of Hartlepool, where the break was confirmed. Fred went on: "They all found it quite amusing and I guess it isn't something that happens every day." A Boro spokesman said: "We have no idea how fast the ball was travelling but everyone in football appreciates how well Ronaldo can strike a ball." Boro drew the game 2-2 and the club have sent Mr Harrison a signed shirt to help cheer him up while he waits to have the cast off in four weeks.

Maybe but he only parried the shot from Ronaldo, he didn't catch it. And if he is breaking his wrists from stopping shots, he perhaps isn't the answer. Then again, Budtz or Harrison. Hmmm, it's a toughy.

I hope it was his right wrist.

Unfortunately it'll probably save his eyesight.

What a class one GUNT. rage

I now think that this is the best possible punishment for any offence anyone commits.

The greater the crime the greater the volume of shit out of the cannon.

This linked with public humiliation would solve the crime wave overnight.

Edward Heath once said that you should only approve of capital punishment if you accepted you might be hanged as a result of a mistake. Well I'd take the chance on a cannon full of good Hartlepool shit. And God knows the Bunker knows about shit.

No no no! No benefit of the doubt please when we're on a roll!

I'm surprised no one has slammed him for infecting his son with the Borer. Or perhaps it was his son who infected him. He is 40 after all.
