There'll be no pubs left either before long - we've lost the Shakespeare and the Brus recently and I've heard there are a few more under threat - King Oswy and the Pink Domino apparently...

More land for Pools to buy along with the baths site for their super stadium development!

Domino has a for sale sign out the front doesn't it? I'm sure I saw it the other day when I was going to my parents.

They'll all end up with flats in their place.

I had a conversation with her indoors about 'local' pubs the other day, they all seem to be going out of business, the only successful ones are those that can do cracking food or have the backing a powerful chains, aka Ember with the White House and Tall Ships.

Is that not because as a chain they are reliant on less profit per pub?

Once they have paid salaries and other expenses and H.O. costs they can probably survive on a couple of hundred quid a week profit per pub if they have 100 of them (£200/wk x 100 = £1m+ per annum profit for the company) whereas the traditional licensee of a single establishment would need at least double that to make it worth their while.

In that case the chains (such as Embers, Wetherspoons etc) will continue to drive all of the others out of business wherever they decide to open up.

Millhouse, The Brus, Pink Domino and Shakespeare all/were crap pubs though. All look unattractive from the outside and aren't much better inside. If they made themselves a bit tidier then they'd give themselves a chance.

Would you really consider spending a night in any of them?

SNOB!

When I was younger we spent many a night in the Mill playing pool and darts, singing on the karaoke, locky backs til 3 and 4 in the morning. Enjoyable times!

Then I met the wife.

I might be wrong but wasn't The Powlett under threat at some stage, and a few over the headland have shut down. May not be the best pubs ever but like CA says they would have been busy enough with locals

Except that too many of their "locals" are dickheads who think it's cool to be seen in the likes of the Shite House so get a taxi or bus halfway across town to sip half of an overpriced lager for three hours in their best gear just so that people think they're posh.

Where's that "wanker" smiley?

I would rather drink in the White House and the Tall Ships than any of the other pubs mentioned though as they're better pubs not because I think I look remotely cool by being in there (I could have a bottle of cider in a bus shelter and still look cool  ). I like local pubs but the ones all listed are crap so obviously people look elsewhere.

When I lived in Clavering I spent most of my spare time drinking 1 quid bottles of Kronenburg but since I have moved the thought of having a drink in either the Shakespeare, Travs or Pink Domino which are my 'locals' doesn't fill me with much excitement. Therefore it requires a taxi journey to somewhere so normally it'd be the Whitey, Tall Ships or Vibes.

However if preferring those pubs to the holes that are mentioned makes me a dickhead or a w**ker then fair enough; at least I'll have had a better night than sitting on some poxy stool in the MillHouse!

The Woody's and the Travs are both only about 5 minutes walk from your house and are both canny pubs.

The Greenies is only a couple of minutes further and that is ok too.

You're just too lazy to walk aren't you.

I could sprint and it would take me longer than five minutes to the Woodys!

I used to like the Travs but last time I went in I was offered drugs in the bogs by some lovely little chavs, the karaoke was appalling (when is Karaoke not appalling) and worst of all the beer was atrocious. It used to be 1.60 a pint in there and you'd get a decent beer, I'm sure it's over 2 quid now and is effing minging.

I frequent the Greensides from time to time and is probably the best out of all the pubs on this side of town.

I would occassionally wander to the Travs when I lived where TPP does now, it's a boring straight walk that I never enjoyed, it's a good 20 minutes as well.

Didn't go much on the place like, the Greensides is okay, but too far away. In the winter cutting through the allotments is not the cleverest of idea to get to the Woody.

After watching you on Tuesday I can well believe that!

In all seriousness it aint far though.

When we lived in Southbrooke we regularly walked to the Woodcutter, Greenies and Travs and hardly ever went into town except for a meal.

And the beer in the Woodys is spot on.

The only reason I generally go into town for a drink now is cos the Shite house, the Aldi Arms and the cricket club are all cack.

Why not? sctatchinghead

We must have done that hundreds of times before we moved.

Not been to the Ships yet. What's it like?

Might have a walk there in the summer, sort of do a lap from Aldi Arms, Tall Ships, White Hart, Raby Arms and back home but can't see me getting a cab there or driving (why do people drive to pubs?).

I couldn't see myself in the Aldi Arms for a drink, the food is decent but there's something not right about it as a boozer.

I do. I was there, I seen it, in fact I guided you into it because you were in a Wetherspoons in town at first. And you had a minging hangover because you are basically a girl, and you drank fook all, all dinnertime, again because you are a bint, ate three packets of Yorkshire Coal crisps, expelled your own weight in urine at half time in a leaky portacabin, had three pies, and then watched a boring 0-0 draw. Three matches later we got relegated.

Ah the good old days when we never had to think about statistics eh?

Atweasle touched on the big reason, the smoking ban. Take the Brus for instance; over 100% of the inhabitants of West View smoke loads of tabs and if they can't smoke in the pub then it spoils their night so they don't go there anymore, instead they sit in the bus shelter with Mr Tax.

Fun and games there last week at teatime, blokes on the roof stripping the tiles off and the cops turn up ... then the lights changed

The mill has never been the same since the lanlady jean went a good 5 or so year ago had many a good night in there. As for the travs that to has never been the same since george had it again some 4 year ago, now its one of the worst pints in the town and for 2 pund 40 or whatever it is.

I think one of the big problems these days is the price of drink, when I was younger than I am now I would regularly have a walk to the nearest pub (Pink Domino in those days) if I got bored on a Tuesday or Wednesday night & would always find a few people to have a pint with but now you need a tenner to go to the pub half an hour before closing.
Also the way the police are breathalyzing 1st thing on a morning stops a lot of people going out if theyre driving to work in the morning.

the only pubs left in town in the future will be the likes of Yates's and the Ember Ins etc. We are getting out of here this year regardless

It was shite....but for match day it was the real deal.

Keep your wetherspoons and king johns and stick em where the sun dont shine.

The Millhouse is a good match day pub and it's the only time I would consider going in there, but if a mate suggested going for a pint on a Tuesday night somewhere in the town; would you consider the MillHouse?

I go to a pub to socialise not for the taste of beer and when did I say I wouldn't go in there; I just said it wouldn't be my first choice of pub and that the only time I'd consider going in there would be on a matchday when it's chocker and you're not really bothered about the surroundings. The rest of the time I find the place dull and I consider the town to have better options. Just my opinion!

Dull?

You mean that you really take notice of the "interior design" in judging somewhere?

I go out for a nice pint and good company (yes, that includes when I go out with the wife!)- surely it is the quality of the company and the conversation which define if a pub is "dull"?
