IT IS A MATTER OF HISTORY THAT WHEN SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE ALLIED FORCES, GENERAL DWIGHT EISENHOWER, FOUND THE VICTIMS OF THE DEATH CAMPS, HE ORDERED ALL POSSIBLE PHOTOGRAPHS TO BE TAKEN, AND FOR THE GERMAN PEOPLE FROM SURROUNDING VILLAGES TO BE USHERED THROUGH THE CAMPS AND EVEN MADE TO BURY THE DEAD.

HE DID THIS BECAUSE HE SAID IN WORDS TO THIS EFFECT: 'GET IT ALL ON RECORD NOW -GET THE FILMS - GET THE WITNESSES - BECAUSE SOMEWHERE DOWN THE TRACK OF HISTORY SOME BASTARD WILL GET UP AND SAY THAT THIS NEVER HAPPENED.'

IN MEMORIAL

This week, the UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population which claims it never occurred. This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended. This e-mail is being sent as a memorial chain, in memory of the six million Jews, 20 MILLION RUSSIANS, 10 MILLION CHRISTIANS and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated while the German people looked the other way!

NOW, MORE THAN EVER, WITH IRAN, AMONG OTHERS, CLAIMING THE HOLOCAUST TO BE 'A MYTH,' IT IS IMPERATIVE TO MAKE SURE THE WORLD NEVER FORGETS.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Edmund Burke

I think someone should inform the Leeds Education Authority, considering they've set me the task of preparing a presentation on the Holocaust for my teaching application. sctatchinghead

Frank, You are either a rabid racist intent on peddling lies or a gullible idiot. See below and then disappear.

BBC NEWS: Holocaust 'ban' e-mail confusion

E-mails are circulating, falsely claiming the UK has banned schools from teaching pupils about the Holocaust.

The suggestion is that this was done by the government to avoid offending some Muslim communities.

The source of the rumour may be a report that some history teachers were uncomfortable with sensitive subjects.

In fact the government has reaffirmed that in England, teaching children about the Holocaust is compulsory, and it is not banned elsewhere in the UK.

A number of people have contacted the BBC News website querying e-mails they have been sent.

One example is headed "In Memoriam".

It says: "Recently this week, UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Moslem population which claims it never occurred."

It adds: "This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it."

'Emotive'

The report that may have given rise to the alarm was commissioned by England's Department for Education and Skills from the Historical Association, which promotes the study and teaching of history.

It said: "Teachers and schools avoid emotive and controversial history for a variety of reasons, some of which are well-intentioned.

"Staff may wish to avoid causing offence or appearing insensitive to individuals or groups in their classes.

"In particular settings, teachers of history are unwilling to challenge highly contentious or charged versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship."

'Holocaust denial'

The report gave as an example a history department in "a northern city" which "recently avoided selecting the Holocaust as a topic for GCSE coursework for fear of confronting anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils".

The government said there was scope for schools to make their own decisions on what to teach within England's national curriculum.

But a spokesman for England's Department for Education and Skills added: "Teaching of the Holocaust is already compulsory in schools at Key Stage 3 [ages 11 to 14].

"It will remain so in the new KS3 curriculum from September 2008."

He said Education Secretary Alan Johnson himself had stressed this.

There are separate national curriculums in Wales and in Northern Ireland, and 5-14 Guidelines in Scotland.

In those, Holocaust teaching is not compulsory but schools may teach it if they wish and this has not changed recently.

In Northern Ireland, for example, the Holocaust is given as an example of some of the things pupils "should" study.

My daughter will soon be off on a school trip to Auschwitz also. Why on earth would Muslim students' feelings be considered in this case and not those of Jewish students??

It all depends on a LEA's curriculum. If a class is studying WWII and the Holocaust, it is more likely to visit Auschwitz than the Somme. When I was at Brinky an English teacher ran a trip every couple of years or so to the Somme because part of the curriculum was WWI poetry (a war which produced some beautiful pieces of poetry), so it does happen.

Going back to the original poster, you should really check your sources before you put up things which are plainly not true.

Iran has made some spurious claims and held a 'Holocaust: The Truth' convention or something along those lines anyway. I'm sure there'll be plenty of Islamic fundamentalists who also believe it never happened, as there are plenty of white power organisations who believe the same thing.

So basically some extreme nutcase makes a claim & some other extreme nutcases* use it as an excuse to stir up racial hatred.

*Strangley enough, the type of extreme nutcases who have tried making exactly the same claim

So the moral of the story is take no notice of extremists or politicians & we'll be cool.

Does anyone claim the play offs never happened too ?

I've been to Auchwitz and I been to both Ypres and the Somme. All were extremely thought provoking. In my opinion, everyone should pay a visit to these plays if at all possible. After we left Auchwitz, the four of us in the car never uttered a single word for about three hours.

It's not the ovens or the mass graves, the little things that get you; huge display cases full of kids clothes. Masses of spectacles. And then there's the suitcases with peoples names on them. Suddenly Aichman was wrong, they had become not a statistic, they were real people.

Watching programmes on the holocaust is tear jerking MR I but to go there must be very humbling indeed.

It brings tears to my eyes just reading about other peoples reactions to a visit to Auschwitz. I'm not sure I would be able to cope with going there myself.

I too have been to Auschwitz. I never believed in ghosts until I went there. There's certainly something there you can't see.

I've been to Dachau and Auschwitz. I was at Dachau on one of the coldest days of the year, snow up to my knees and a wind chill that nearly took my face off. How people survived in that I'll never know. Considering I was wrapped up in a scarf, gloves and a thick winter jacket I was still absolutely freezing. The museum was excellent and I was one of only 3 or 4 visitors so I was able to really get inside the place.

Auschwitz was the polar opposite. It was one of the hottest days of the year, me and my two friends had been travelling on a train all night so we were knackered and we arrived mid afternoon meaning we didn't have all day to really explore both sites. It was very powerful stuff and I still came away shocked to the core (the corridor in a building in Auschwitz 1 was what got me the most as there were row upon row of prisoners pictures on the wall; the photo of one petrified prisoner in particular really shook me up, the face of bloke who knows he's going to his death) but I wish I'd had more time to look around.
