i played up at benton yesterday morning at the home of the northumberland f.a.

great pitch, great set-up, but i couldnt help notice that is also the home of west allotment celtic f.c.

this was a new northern league ground for me. to be honest i diddnt even know they played in the northern league until somebody told me.

just checked their website and they appear to be bottom of northern league one, and one of their top scorers is andy hay, who i assume is the ex pools andy hay.

i also noted that terry mitchell was their manager a few years back guiding them from the northern alliance to the northern league before joining pools academy.

back in the 60s and 70s i know northern league football was quite well attended and i remember my old man taking me to see durham city play once and im pretty sure there was a four figure attendance.

but now all the pits are closed ( most of the colliery sides played on colliery welfare pitches and everything was paid for by the pit ) how do these teams stay in business ? theres nothing on the west allotment website to say what their attendances are like, but im sure it was only 2 quid to get in.

Different times chip I suppose, too many other options for lads now, most of which involve acting like big girls blouses.

I used to go to Durham City and Spennymoor when Pools were away, their main income then was sponsors. I know Spenny went bust and have reformed in the Northern League. Durham have a football arena attached to there ground and a child creche, i think they might also have a physiotherapy unit i may be wrong. Im assuming give them some form of income, i know Durham also have a lot of sponsors too, they are geared up for a higher division IMO.

Chip did you ever play against a lad called Norman Herd or Hird.

He is a Trimdon Grange lad but he was kind of banished when he was caught pilphering in the dressing room, i dont know how true these accusations were but i would believe the majoirty. The last i heard he was living in Easington god only knows where he is now.

He was an excellent footballer when he was younger and played for various local teams in the 80s-90s, i wouldnt like to say how old he was but i would say late 30s early 40s. I heard he used to sleep in a concrete coal bunker when his dad put him out.

Where do you know him from Mutters.

i know of him, but i dont think i ever played against him. from what i recall he was a good few years younger than me. might have been playing northern junior league round about the same time as bob taylor.

the only really good footballers from trimdon that i can remember when i was a kid was david chaytor ( bit too small to make it as a pro but i think his dad played professionally, and ran a lot of teams ) and a lad called paul robinson, who i think the boro signed as an apprentice.

most of the lads i knew from trimdon were out and out villians. there was one kid, tommy o connor who used to drive to school from trimdon. he was always getting pulled up for parking in the teachers car park.

he was 14 at the time. think he ended up in borstal.

there was another lad from trimdon in my year at school called eggs. he was a very hard young man. only saw him fighting in the playground the once and the level of violence he used was unbelievable.

If David chaytor is the one im thinking of little with glasses hes a Labour councillor i think at Trimdon Village another Blairite  .

Paul Robinson seems to ring a bell too in my head, i know Tommy O Connor too he lives in Darlo now i think and has served time at Her Majestys Pleasure rolfl . His brother lives opposite me hes called Irish Eddy jackanory has got nothing on this man
