I seem to get post most days from people wanting my money. But a letter and leaflet I received today, from this organisation, didn't go straight into the bin. Particularly this week, I think it is worth a little of your time looking at, and possibly contributing too.

I was on a course once and shared a room with one namely Libu-Gurungh Aspuhadur or 'little legs' as he became known. Great little warriors, heart of a lion fit as a very fit thing and loyalty beyond question.

When I was at 10 Field Workshop in Tidworth a Ghurkha bloke based in Aldershot brought in a 4-tonner for repair. 'Garri no go...' was all we could get out of him.

Then he sat on the guardroom steps for 24 hours until it was ready to drive away.

I was drawn to the plight of St Dunstans home for blinded ex servicemen a couple of years back. Buy a lottery ticket...? ...no thanks, a monthly payment to organisations like this makes far more sense to me. Just my opinion of course.

However, its a national disgrace that organisations such as St Dunstans, BLESMA and Combat Stress such survive on voluntary donations from the public.

My Grandad fought alongside Gurkhas in Burma in the war, and has nothing but total respect for them. He reckons they're among the hardest and bravest of amy regiment.

They used to join the Indian Army way way back in the days of the Raj. Remember that India was a British colony. When India was given independence, the Gurkah regiments were split down the middle; half continued with the Indian Army and the other half joined ours. They are (or were) predominantly based at Church Crookham near Aldershot. A more loyal, prouder, smarter and fitter bunch of lads you will not find anywhere. That said I do thing the mystique is a bit far fetched. They are as good as any normal infantry regiment but no better, no worse.

I don't think so, after all their tactics and weapons have to fit in with the rest of armed forces. Elite convential forces such as Marines & Paras use the same fundemental tactics but with variations. The difference is in the quality of the individual and the intensity of the training. That and esprit de corps which is sadly disappearing rapidly across the forces.

They are particularly suited to certain types of warfare thought because of their upbringing. anything involving hills or jungles and they are in their element.

They are certainly very active in the private security world of Iraq and Afganistan.

If you ever saw a Ghurka wielding his knife in his native habitat you'd think twice about EVER messing with one.

I went on a trek in Sikkim, along with the compulsory porters who were all from Ghurka tribes. When they needed wood for the fire they found a fallen tree and stripped it down to the trunk in about five minutes flat using nothing but their knives, with all the branches nicely cut up into even sized logs. It really was like something out of Looney Tunes.
