no he is better than that. the guy has gone into some of the worlds most famous art galleries and museums, smuggled his own work in and left it there, and nobody twigged.

a lot of his work stayed for weeks on end, one exhibit lasted 2 years in the natural history museum.

anyhows, each to his own. i like him a lot.

Of course no-one knew......

Finding a painting in places like the Tate or Baltic would be a major shock to their collective ego's...I'm old fashioned, I believe art is a skill, you've either got it or you haven't..modern art is the excuse for the untalented to talk bullshit about dross.....Banksy has found a niche by courting celebrity clients....but if I had to choose between him and balls on a roundabout I'd give him the nod.

He's nothing but a vandal, just because he can draw a bit doesn't make him above the law, and by the letter of the law, he is a vandal.

the point is that places like the tate and moma in new york are so full of shite nobdy is gonna notice another piece of shite.

and nobody expects someone to smuggle a painting into a gallery.

thats funny, I aint heard of this gadgie - but I did that once!

I used to get irate at the shite up in the saltburn 'artists' gallery and would frequently use the guest book to slag off the crap in it...anyways one day I decided it was all just crap in the name of making a statement, so I went home got me brushes out and wrote "I can't Paint!" on a piece of cardboard then flicked splashes and drips of paint all over it....it made a statement and looked like the art up on the walls already....whence it dried off I went to the gallery and blu-tacked it to the wall!

stayed there for about a week before they realised the daft gets!!

The one I liked was the gallery in Amsterdam, I believe, where the star visiting exhibit was composed of 5 black bags full of rubbish supposedly making some statement ... the night cleaners threw it out

yeah there was an article on it on the bbc website last week.

apparently some east end locals are pished off that the great mans graffiti is driving up house prices by making run down areas look trendy.

interestingly residents in bristol voted overwhelmingly to keep one of his most famous works rather than paint over it.

contentious shiit graffitti innit. like banksy says tho the likes of us gets no say if the council whacks a great big advertising hoarding at the end of your street and lets corporate advertising exec wankers plaster cheap shite all over it advertising the latest must have shite.

banksys words of wisdom :

try to avoid painting in places where they still point at aeroplanes.

you dont go to a restaurant and order a meal because you later want to have a shiit. ( on accusations that he painted to become famous )

the easiest way to become invisible is to wear a day-glo vest and carry a tiny transistor radio blasting out heart fm at high volume. when questioned about the legitimacy of your painting simply complain about the hourly rate.

people who enjoy waving flags dont deserve to have one.

mcdonalds is stealing our children.

people abuse you every day. they butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you then disappear. they leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. they make flippant comments from buses that imply you are not sexy enough, and all the fun is happening somewhere else. they are on tv making your girlfriend feel inadequate. they have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. they are the advertisers and they are laughing at you.

you owe the companies nothing . you especially dont owe them any courtesy. they have rearranged the world to put themselves in front of you. they never asked for you permission, dont even start asking for theirs.

so yeah he is kinda a hero of mine, my kids love his books. they think he is great.

he is up there with the makers of the wire and the popular musical beat combo bright eyes at the moment in my list of things to see and hear.

Why does Banksy get away with it - because he's got talent? If talent allows you to do something illegal, how come Harold Shipman was convicted.

Probably because of his gimmicks, he's liked and collected by the chattering classes and various celebs, they then talk him up and talk the value of his work up. They profit, he profits. To be honest, if he put them in a gallery he'd starve:wink:

I'm a fan of DIY culture
I used to live on Streatham High Rd, Brixton Hill, the busiest road in London.
Woke up one morning and some people had decided to have a street party, sound system with loads of music, brought pneumatic drills, drilled holes in the road and planted trees.
Plenty of outraged commuters in cars. I thought it was great :sweeeet:
tree huggers; people who chain themselves to trees and build tree houses to stop airports and roads being built, the women at greenham common etc. I think they're all great.
I went on the poll tax and criminal justice bill marches.
The worlds gone mad and dull at the same time.
There's too many rules. You dont have to obey them in my mind as long as you dont hurt other people. If you believe in something then make a stand. We're all too dulled by consumerism, getting the latest fucking gadget or car.
Banksy is a star - and a very talented one at that.

I really don't get the whole banksy 'thing', does that make me dulled by consumerism?, sooner or later he will sell out, they all do

I'm sure it doesnt make you that no. I just wanted a bit of a rant.
Personally I like the way he does what I would call art wherever he chooses.
When it comes down to taste though, I actually think his stuff is great. Its all opinion though, as plenty of people, yourself included, probably dont like it.

They all sell out in the end, the trick is getting noticed. He's done that. start counting the commissions.
