Halloween has sadly graduated to another sad step down the road to Little America... a commercial opporunity to be exploited, ducking for apples and candles in turnips all look rather tame now..sadly. My birthday is on Halloween  and I suggested we stay in instead of going out ...long faces all round... till one of the lads said don't forget we'll be tortured all night by groups of kids and their parents banging on the door... we're going out!

The Supermarkets make more money out of 'Halloween' than Easter now.

Halloween used to be no more than a dry run for THE festival, which was November 5th. Apart from hollowing turnips out, which was a bloody chore, it held no interest whatsoever. Nobody had a fookin' clue what trick or treat meant (not sure I do even now).

Now of course I'm a mature adult so I get dressed up and do the town.

I'm surprised it's taken this long. I remember when they used to start a couple of weeks early. Once bonfire night is out of the way they'll be carol singing.

There is a new one now......mischief night!

It originated in Liverpool and takes place a few days before bonfire night. Gangs of youths go round smashing car mirrors, putting fireworks through letterboxes and causing general mayhem. It hasn't quite reached here yet but is well on the way. rage

Also, with Trick or Treaters, just say, "Trick!". They almost never have a trick and when they say so, tell them they can't have a treat then and shut the door. The confused looks on theri faces are priceless. (but make sure you cellotape your letterbox down to avoid anything nasty being put through when they it dawns on them they are getting nowt)

Eeeh, I remember in the old days we used to have police to stop those kinds of things.

Anybody else remember that?

I'd throw water over them but the law being what it is, I would be the one who gets done

When i was a lad all you could do for halloween was buy those cheapy hard plastic masks with the multicoloured hair (and sharp edges which could cut your nose if you were not carefull) and a turnip/candle/black bag. Nowadays supermarkets have a full isle devoted to halloween sctatchinghead

Ok so its much better quality stuff but it must cost parents a fortune

Of course I'm sure none of us did anything a bit naughty did we?
Espec not at this time of year?
Or have we all forgotten as most of us enter our thirties, forties, fifties?
I work with teenagers and the amount of people who think they should have our morals, whilst conveniently forgetting how they thought and behaved in their own youth.
i used to chuck eggs off people's windows if they didnt give me a treat.
What do I do now? Open the door and enter into verbal banter before treating them with money and kets?
Nah. I just dont answer the door the cheeky begging bastards
