Michael Maidens "From a Poolie in Saltburn"
Although I had met Michael once, I never had the chance to have a full coversation with him. I do however feel proud to have congratulated him on his "Goal of the season" award.
Despite growing up and spending the first 24 years of my life in Hartlepool, I now find myself living in Saltburn, which has been my home for the past six years. I fully understand the sense of loss in Hartlepool, and within H.U.F.C. The reaction in Saltburn is something the majority of you will not have seen.
Being a "Shirt Wearing Poolie in Saltburn", I have been stopped by people in the street who have passed on their condolences. I have had lengthy conversations with Landlords, Shopkeepers, Residents and other mad locals about what can only be described as a tragic loss. Every Saltburn resident either knew Michael, or knows a member of his Family. It was only a few months ago when two of his Cousins were in my Kitchen fitting a Dishwasher and talking so proudly of him. Despite living in a Boro stronghold, everyone who knew Michael, or who knows his family is very proud of achievements with Hartlepool United. Coming from a very small town like Saltburn, Michael Maidens achieved the unexpected. He did what all of us 30 somethings have only dreamt of. Michael pulled on the Blue and White and somehow managed to score one of the finest goals I have ever seen in The Town End at The Vic.
I am certain Michael would have carried on growing at Hartlepool, and gone to be an integral part of the current success story.

I will feel proud to re-live "that" goal, whenever anyone from Saltburn asks me how good a player he was.

The people of Saltburn are proud of you Michael. As are the people of Hartlepool.

R.I.P

Beatniksmith.
