I'm trying to like it, honest I am and some of the features I really do like. Moreover its not crashed or frozen yet and everything happens much faster than Windows. Trouble is, I feel like I'm back in the days of Windows 3.1. It's a very basic GUI and installing stuff it a bit of a mess around what with lines of command in terminal windows. Searching for stuff is a right pain too.

Reliability is indeed excellent and for a business platform I'm quite impressed. I miss the windows bits and bobs though.

I used to prefer the CLI, now I guess I'm just lazy.

What, you mean all the 100 or so available GUIs are very basic?

I didn't know that, I haven't dug that far to be honest. Are these genuinely different GUI's of simply styles/skins?

There aren't a lot that you'd really call advanced GUIs but really it's up to you to find your own best compromise between complexity/ability to hoover the house/etc. and lightness/speed

KDE is a highly configurable desktop environment, with many apps having their own KDE variant
Gnome is a highly configurable desktop environment, probably as comprehensive as KDE
Xpde is a slightly less complex DE aimed at resembling the Windows XP interface as much as possible
Xfce is a lightweight configurable graphic interface
Enlightenment is a pure GUI/window manager/application launcher with some impressive eye-candy
Black box is a very fast GUI stripped down to the bare bones
etc.
etc.
etc.

And no they are not just skins, they are all distinct interfaces using different concepts.

In fact there's nothing stopping you having all of them on your machine and switching between them depending on your mood.

There is a Linux package called "Lindows" which is skinned very similar to that of Windows XP! I think it depends what version of Linux your using wether its useable or not, Some are just pure for server based stuff and remote connections, Others are used as a PC!

There is some good skin packs for most versions of Linux with the similar interface to that of Windows
