Do we honestly want to go beck to the days when you could count the people in the crowd on one hand, when our ground was a dump and the pitch was used for grazing cattle and sheep midweek..... How the hell did we stay alive then?

The mighty 'Wrexham Frontline' congregated on the left hand side of the fence I do believe.

LOL, the photo reminds me of helping my granda to complete spot-the-ball competitions many moons ago.

There'll have been a lot more people in the Rink End though as that is the way we are kicking.

I am loving these photos from the 80s, the time I started going to Pools games.

Mt brother always tells a story of taking his wife, then his girlfriend, to Pools one day and someone sliced their shot that badly that it went through that pie cabin hatchway and drummed about in there for ages.

It did in part of the 80s too.

Correct me if Im wrong, but Im sure that there were no womens toilets at Pools in those days,in fact no toilets at all, just the brick trough behind the mill house stand.

I never want to see us go back to those days, like. I enjoy watching us play in front of 5,000-odd crowds, with good players in our team who I expect to be able to beat sides like Brighton this weekend.
If we had even been on the same pitch as a Brighton side back then we would have been stuffed, and it would have been a certainty before a ball was kicked. Not now, I'm glad to say.

It's still our history though, we can't escape it. bbolt

When I was a lad, and me Dad took me to the match the pitch at the Victoria ground used to get obscured by clouds of steam coming out of the Engines pulling trains out of the Station on the other side of Clarence Road.

There was one game he took me to around the time when Kenny Johnson was star man and Pools goalie got injured I'd guess it was in the days before substitutes cos Kenny had to don the 'keepers jersey and go in goal. That gave rise to the family knowledge/myth that Kenny Johnson played in every position for Pools including goalie.

I'd be impressed if anyone could give me the date of the game and who Pools were playing when that happened. (I can't remember cos I was only a nipper and I wouldn't know how to find out)

Kenny and his Mrs (Ollie) made some good fishnchips on the Fens Shops for a long time after.

I think the only 'Ladies' in the ground was under the old Clarence Road Stand. Any female visitors elsewhere in the ground had to make their way around to the end gates, and persuade the steward/jobsworth to let them through to spend a penny.

Well impressed! Fancy me Dad taking a nipper to a Derby.

Did Kenny play in every position?

I know it's a hard ask but someone might know for certain.

I don't know how strictly the shirt numbers used to equate to position on the pitch but I think it was pretty consistent. Johnson started for Pools in seven different shirt numbers, usually 8 (135 times) or 9 (128), but also 4 (78), 6 (38), 7 (10), 10 (14) and 11 (10). I guess it's safe to say he was versatile.

at the start of his career
2 3 full backs
4 5 6 half backs
7 11 ouside right n left
8 10 inside r n l
9 centre forward

when speaking to him he has played in every position and considering he played a lot of his career in the half back line and he is still top league scorer - although there was a query on this 98 or 101 in some circles back in the 60s.....he did okay!!

i would imagine he has dropped back for injuries or alternatively numbers have not been changed to represent position on occasion
