Whitby v Pools Commentary

Renamed in memory of John Hawksworth, a stalwart member who passed this day 2nd August 2020. RIP Mr Monkeybutt.

Sadly we must add the name of Kevin Minton, Aka Mr Ripper who passed 30/6/22. Kev was also Mr politically incorrect but a nicer lad you could never meet.

Might turn out to be the next Nico Muir, but if Pools take a punt on a striker from the part-time leagues they could do worse than Ruben Bartlett-Antwi.

I think Niko Muir got unlucky with timing, dickie Dosh era and all that, I thought he was pretty decent.
As for Bartlett -Antwi, two goals in two games is promising and the fact he's had league one teams monitoring him suggests he's got something. A few articles mentioning him as a low risk high reward signing. Could well be worth a punt.

Nico is still playing, but turning out for Pools in the NL was as high as he went, so I'm not sure how unlucky he was.

Bartlett-Antwi is bigger, stronger and quicker that Muir by the look of a clip of his goals last season on X. Whether he'd be as confident in front of goal at a higher level than the Dog and Duck (Isthmian League) is the $64,000 question, as ever.

Personally I've never forgiven John Borthwick for being a dunce for Pools and a goal machine for Darlo.

A good point although the meteoric rise of Mike Fondop Tallum from a Pools laughing stock to a promotion winning goal scorer and club talisman is hard to top.

I'm going against the grain here, but I always rated John Borthwick, he was technically better than the team he was in, if that makes sense. A Hartlepool teddy sheringham if you will lol

Goal machine for the loids-that's a bit strong isn't it?! I much preferred Andy 'Pixie' Toman- up until his two fingered salute after having a shocker.

Dunno, to quote his entry in ITMC " A hard-working forward, he struggled to endear himself to the terraces through his lack of goals and he left the club in 1989 having scored just 14 times in 117 league games. He joined rivals Darlington where he found his shooting boots, finished top scorer two seasons in a row as the Quakers won first the Conference title, and then the Fourth Division."

No doubt he was playing for a better team than Pools when he was with the Loids in their 'glory years' but that still doesn't excuse all the chances he missed at the Vic confised

We've go lots of history of making good players look bad and average players look awful. It's what we do, very few players come to Pools and improve.

I think Ruben Bartlet Antwi may be worth the gamble if league one clubs are sniffing has scored 2 in2 you can only score against what is put in front of you. Swindon have taken a risk on a goal machine from lower down the football pyramid,

Simon Grayson said they picked up niggles in training, so didn't play them. He said they could have played if needed, but left them out as it was only a friendly.

Luke Charman featured in 43 games last season for us so hardly injury prone.

It's not like he was good enough to be an automatic pick to start either. Sarlly had no time for him because he couldn't be persuaded to kick anybody

Was more referring to Walker…
Charman was the perfect Sarll player….ran around got stuck in etc, can’t actually fault the lads effort, if the game wasn’t played with an actual ball he’d be in the Premier League

Charman was in and out a bit last year as well, more so Walker though, surprised with the stat he started 43 games last year mind you ! I thought he played a lot less/was out more
