My nephew has asked me about joining up as a mechanic. Not a bad idea as far as I'm concerned, its all very well going for the glory but as I found from personal experience, the jobcentre has very few vacancies cards stating 'commando needed'.

Any serious advice on joining REME?

Mind you, despite the 'hat' thing, there's no such thing as a REMF any more. The front line is all very wobbly these days.

Well I'm a little out of touch at this late stage but the trade training was good, if the range of vehicles was a little limited. They used to go in three categories 'A' mech was heavy stuff, tanks, APC's etc, 'B' mech was light wagons, cars and rovers, and 'C' mech was plant. It used to be a two year course and it was a City and Guilds then.

Depending on how old he is, he can go from school to Apprentice College at Wokingham near Reading or straight to Bordon near Aldershot. Usual basic training and then into trade training.

Which one snuffed it then Mr G.

I know that Berry had a brain aneurysm a while back but I thought he made a full recovery

Mr I, Mr Glasses was refering to R.E.M. the popular american rock band

Bill Berry is alive and well and working on his hay farm in Georgia. He recently joined the rest of the band for a one off appearance at a benefit gig.

Seeing as you're talking music now (thread diversion?), has anybody heard the new Reverand and the Makers cd yet? I bought it yesterday and am impressed.

(Prepares for derogatory comments...)

Farking hoy!!!!!! this is a recruitment thread.

PK, I understand from the REME website that there is only A & B now. A works on tracked vehicles, B on wheeled. B is therefore obviously the one to go for.

They are apparently very undermanned which surprised me a bit. I can understand the infantry/RM being undermanned but not technical trades.

By the way, is VM an A or B trade?

A B trade, yeah I wouldn't expect my info to be up to date like I said. He could try the recruitment office if they still have them and I've seen newspaper ads with freephone numbers on??

Knew a bloke called Jimmy Bendixs in the R.E.M.E. but I think he is still alive.
Don't you have to take an Intellegence test to get in now, you had to when I joined. Mind you that was a long time ago when we had an Army
