Anyone got an idea?

I've just noticed on the official site:

Answering my own questions now sctatchinghead

Quote:
Lord Burlison of Rowlands Gill is a life-long trade unionist.Known to most people as Tom, he is one of the few members of the House of Lords who have played as a professional footballer. In the 1950s he played 140 league games for Hartlepool United, as well as a stint with Darlington. He still serves as Hartlepool's honorary life president. The honour does not confer any particular rights, though the vicar of St Mary's Church in Whickham, Gateshead, the Reverend Barry Abbott said: "You are welcome to come to the churchyard and graze your sheep."

When I started seeing Pools I saw Tom play a few games. Later when we wanted to sponsor a match ball for a game as a thank you for being invited into the directors box for a couple of games and wanted to come up & see the match we found out that Tom had sponsored the ball for that match but had agreed to change it to another game so we could get our wish. We beat Rochdale 3-1 with our hero Roy Hogan (who's kit we sponsored) scoring a penalty. So to me Tom is a top bloke and I know that everyone who knows him speaks highly of him as a really nice man. Good to have someone associated with the game and the club as a life president rather than some figurehead politician I think.

Aye, thems mans socks and boots, you should have seen him when he had his shin pads in as well. And the ball used to weigh a ton as well, and when it rained (and it always did in those pre global warming days) the ball got even heavier as it would absorb water. And they only got paid 10 shillings a week and had to wash their own kit. Kids of today think they've got it hard but they have got it made.

I recognise that stand in the background - that stand was still at the rink end until the 70's if I'm not mistaken. Every time the ball used to hit it with a vengeance everyone under it used to get showered in rust!

But they did all get a free perm as a perk.

Anyone remember when Dundee United's top boys came down for a pre-season friendly in the early seventies?

There was carnage in that end.  All seven of them were at it :sweeeet: :sweeeet:

I remember when Aberdeens daft lads were here, the game continued as about a dozen of them walked the length of the pitch by the touchline. Wasn't it only about 10 minutes in as well, a long bloody way to travel for a bit of dancing.

We were in the Town End that day.

So were some of Pools hard lads, which I don't think the Jocks were expecting.

I remember P*"£y, Cr*&!y (identities deliberately protected  ) and a few others climbing over the fence to get at the Aberdeen lads and they sent them back up their end of the ground in next to no time! rolfl

The game Fens and I are on about was around 10 years ago PK, I think it was the first pre-season after IOR took over.

You said Dundee in the early 70's.

Fensy is talking about Aberdeen in about 2001.

It's like an old peoples home in here! rolfl

It finished 3-3 if I remember correctly and Gary Strodder scored a flying volley from about 20 yards I think
