After dinner today the wife said get changed we’re going out……we end up at Billingham Forum theatre.
I’ve always wanted to see a big band Glenn Miller style to experience the sound and see what it was actually like from what my old man used to say as he was a big fan…well I got to experience it today
Never got round to it but did today and was blown away by it live in a way I never expected from a 20 man outfit…..three hours flew past even got some background into the compositions of the 40’s and 50’s.
Live music really is magic…..as always…well apart from Billy Dogeyes effort which ended in ignominy.

I've played trumpet in bands for 38 years (straight up no joke). I love playing music from that era.

It was an education to me, heard it before, but live adds a new dimension.

You should check out Hartlepools musicians unlimited, they do the big band thing at Jackson's Wharf, last Sunday of the month I think.
I used to go see them when they did Sunday afternoon at the studio a few years back, they're excellent. Well worth a few pints on a Sunday. Nice...

love to listen to it also especially the singers who can actually sing as well as musicians like yourself who can play an instrument and some more than one. just a pity you do not get the financial rewards for your talent like many from the big band era who were hust sidemen in a famous band. her in the kitchens old man was a trumpeter for many years with geraldo but eventually packed it in for a job at kodak with a young family to support in the late 40,s.

Mick Donnelly one of the unsung heroes from Hartlepool, loved his bands a mixture of young and older musicians, not really my type of music but admired the very talented musicians playing for the love of it.
My best memory of musicals was Billy Elliot, I was in London and went to see it with my daughter, the young Billy Elliot was played by a young lad from Hartlepool.

I went to the town hall to see a viola and piano concert the other week.
It was amazing the skill and talent of the performers.
It was a tribute to Lionel Tertis a world renowned performer with the viola who was born in West Hartlepool in 1876 and died in 1975.
It was even better than the Spice Girls IMO.

Musical taste is a personal thing and I do hate those who think one type of music is better than another…each to their own.

The young Billy Elliot went to North Field school in Billingham the same class as my sister-in-law. He was born in Billingham not Hartlepool.

I was in The Studio every week for over a year back in the day to watch and listen to them. Then I think they went to The Park. I'll have to get down to Jacksons Wharf sometime soon to catch them again. Loved it.

I was at a wedding in the summer and they had a brass band doing the music for the first half, modern stuff rather than the disco. It was pretty spectacular especially when they started wandering through the crowds dancing while still playing their instruments.

Live music is, as mentioned above, something that really stirs the soul

used to be great when bandstands were used for the purpose they were built for and a local brass or silver band played in them on a warm sunday afternoon in summer. doubt the lefties would want that as it was once part of our culture.

Me and our lass are going to see SCOTT BRADLEE'S POSTMODERN JUKEBOX May 4th at Gateshead. Between 15 and 20 in the band.

Here's a little bit of a write-up about them...

Concertgoers can expect to enter a parallel musical universe where modern-day earworms and iconic pop hits alike are reimagined in classic genres like 1920s jazz, Swing, Doo-wop and Motown, and brought to life by a cast of some of the world’s best singers, dancers, and instrumentalists. Think “The Great Gatsby” meets “Sinatra at the Sands” meets “Back! …To The Future”.

Can't wait....should be a cracker.
