The North East starts/ends?

I was back in the Hart of the Pool at weekend visiting my Mum and was thinking about this as I was driving back, darn sarf to Ketrin.

To the north would be the border with the Sweaties, to the west the Pennines, though the south is less obvious

I came to the conclusion that the borderline
(not the red light district near borers ground!)
was The Tontine Hotel on the A19.
Further south, you've then got Northallerton and Thirsk and that's definitely North Yorkshire.

Some might say the Tees Flyover, but that would exclude Borer, Thornaby and Yarm.
Then thought how far down the coast do you go , Saltburn/ Marske. Reckon Whitby would be too far.

The line of the Cleveland hills and South of the A66 from Scotch Corner in a westerly direction.

I’d be keen to claim the north North Yorkshire Moors so a line along the A170 from Thirsk, taking in Helmsley, then diagonally up to Whitby. You’re then up the A1(M) and west towards Bernard Castle. Richmond is marginal.
I think the western border is about Stanhope then include everything to the east of the A68 to the Scottish border. Hexham makes the cut.

The Southern boarder yeh id agree is a funny one - because unlike the North, there isnt much there in terms of larger geographical towns. Once you get past Yarm its pretty much farms and villages - but i always think / know that im home when i reach Thirsk. so for me its always been that point. Although you could argue as soon as the A1 turn off onto the A19 you are technically in the North East and thats miles back from Thirsk.

Get south of the Cleveland Hills and A66 and they’ll deny they’re in the North East but are true Yorkshire folk.

a lot of it is about where you are coming from. back in the old days before the A19 was duelled we always stopped there as it was a half way house for us. Stopped in yarm once and thought why bother we are nearly home. Just wonder who hootball fans who live in thirsk mainly support. a yorkshire club like york or leeds or the boro or even pools.

Remember having the radio running at work in the mid 70’s…it was a radio station based in Newcastle (the name escapes me)…..but there was a phone in asking when you felt you were back in the North East travelling back to the area…one elderly lady said when her train hit Hartlepool she was back in the North East and the ‘DJ’ went absolutely apeshit saying it was a disgusting place full of awful people…much to my annoyance and turned it off never to listen to it again….later mentioned it to my mother and she asked who it was…when I told her …she said she thought it might be him and said he’s from the Headland and always thought he’d do and had a chip on his shoulder even as a kid……..cheeky twat. :angry-tappingfoot:

The Boro..end off.
I must apologise for putting ‘end off’ instead of ‘end of’……ll sctatchinghead ‘end off’ sounds painful. :o
