What is this habit with modern day people answering a question with "yeah, no"?, surely if someone asks a question it's either one or the other followed by an explanation of why.

Or is it just a example of today's wokey stance of covering all bases incase of upsetting one or the other group and agreeing to questions on both fronts?

Either way it sounds ridiculous to me.

IE...Do you like chocolate? A. "Yeah, no, I mean the chocolate tastes nice but I have had chocolate that was much better, but this is a quality chocolate regardless, and should go a long way to satisfying my personal chocolate needs"

can understand a reply of yes and no if asked for an opinion on anything. the plain yes no makes no sense whatsoever. like yanks who call maths math.

Spot on Johnny. The one I hate is 'can I get' rather than 'can I have'...........

Never come across that one tbh, the stupid Yankee-ism that narks me most is the ‘Get-Go’ meaning ‘start’. Even the corrupted version of the English language that is commonly used in the states has incorporated the word ‘start’ for hundreds of years so why the need now to substitute it with gobbledygook? Does anyone have an explanation?

Very prevalent up here in Scotland. In fact so bad that I have noticed myself doing it and I've only lived up here for 23 years so no real excuse

My pet hates are:

1) middle snooker table pockets being called centre pockets. It is the equivalent of calling the middle stump the centre stump.

2) the word amount being used when it should be number.
e.g. The amount of goals scored should be the number of goals scored.
At school I was taught that it was an amount of sugar and a number of sugar lumps. Non countable v countable!

fine, each to their own but that comes over as being a fussy english teacher who knows what a young kid is on about but pick em up for using an incorrect word. for me it does not matter as long as someone gets their meaning over to another and they understand it. know its not world ending but yankie spelling and their words in britain are my gripe as it is not necessary.

Another one is people who say "like I said" all the time, even when they haven't said it .

OK in the pub or on the terraces but broadcasters on national TV should keep up standards.
BTW I got a bare pass (grade 6) 'O' level in English Language.
