just read warnock's auto biography a very good read.he says the following about len ashurst and his time at pools.
Len Ashurst at hartlepool probably taught me more than anybody ,particularly about man management. He showed me how to get blood out of a stone at a club with no money.he showed me about generating funds himself because he was so desperate to improve things.some of the trips we did he paid for out of his own pocket.
He also reckons that he still uses the same fitness regime pre season that tony toms taught him when he was at pools.
It's a good read by the way whether or not you like warnock.

I started watching Pools every game in season 71/72 when Ashurst was the Manager. After about 40 games we were rock bottom and doomed (think Macclesfield pre Paul Ince) . It was common knowledge that if we finished bottom we would not be re-elected and so would have gone into the Northern Premier league and we would probably have ended up like Workington.

Ashurst and Tony Toms instilled something into a group of mediocre players which enabled them to go on a great run and end up 6th bottom.

Forget Brian Clough, Len Ashurst is a real old school Pools hero.
