agree with bollocks and gibb but I think Maidens could develop. Baron is set to become a backroom boy.

All these:

Robbie Elliott
Mickey Barron
Ali Gibb
Matty Robson
Stephen Turnbull
Michael Maidens
Lee Bullock

Not a lot really, but if we could swap them for three top class players (1 def, 1 mid, 1 att) our squad would start to look seriously good across the board. We'd have a million strikers on the books mind. Might have to offload one or two.

everyone was saying similar at the start of the season!!! If we don't have the replacements lined up we would like, and any new signing would be simply replacing the ones who are earmarked for leaving (i.e. no better than what we already have), then we may as well keep the ones who were earmarked for release, as at least they have an understanding of the way the club operates and how to play with their team mates (oo,err, missus).
The bottom line is negotiations with potential future signings would be the key to any players leaving.

I'd split them into a few groups and I think anyone outside the first group is possibly on their way out subject to contracts which I haven't checked.

Group 1 - core players

1 Jan Budtz Goalkeeper
2 Jamie McCunnie Defender
4 Willie Boland Midfielder
5 Michael Nelson Defender
7 Gary Liddle Midfielder
10 Joel Porter Striker
11 Andy Monkhouse Midfielder
14 James Brown Striker
15 Antony Sweeney Midfielder
17 David Foley Striker
21 Arran Lee-Barrett Goalkeeper
22 Ian Moore Striker
24 Michael Mackay Striker
9 Richard Barker Striker

second string players
19 Matty Robson Midfielder
8 Ritchie Humphreys Midfielder
18 Ali Gibb Midfielder
25 Michael Maidens Midfielder
6 Ben Clark Defender (wrongly)
3 Robbie Elliott Defender

Prospects
26 Michael Rae Striker
23 Stephen Turnbull Midfielder
29 Tom Haigh Midfielder
30 Martin Young Midfielder
31 Scott Allison Goalkeeper

Dead wood

12 Mickey Barron Defender
Lee Bullock (on loan to Bury ) Midfielder

Loans not counted.
20 Godwin Antwi (on loan from Livpool ) Defender
27 Danny Coles (on loan from Hull ) Defender[/quote]

based on apearances is not far wrong, but that top list of "core" players is heavy with strikers, and light on midfielders/defenders. I would also think Sweeney is quite low down the pecking order these days, and maybe gets as many outings as Matty Robson. I think Humphreys must have played a few games by now as a "core" type of player, although I can't help but wonder if it is only until such time we get a specialist left back at some point, who plays like a specialist left-back!!!!

I think theres little doubt that Humphreys is now a utility player. Wilson has used him up to now as back up until he signs a proper defender (Coles) thereafter I can't see him being used other than as a squad backup player. This in itself might be enough to earn him a new contract.

I reckon that ginger lad from the MK Dons, Lewington?, is probably be the best left back I have seen in the last couple of years and wouldn't mind seeing him in a Pools shirt, but no doubt there will be lots of clubs interested in him if and when he is available

Sweeney and Porter are somewhere inbetween Core and Squad in Wilson's eyes (at the moment). I believe that Barron will become a FT coach at the end of the season. I can see Bullock going in January and Gibb will need to force his way into squad players at least if he is to be offered a contract. Maidens seems to be in the Stephen Istead/Jack Wilkson position of previous seasons and could end up like them, although I do believe he has talent. The Older Prospects are always in a dangerous position, I haven't seen any ressie games to make any kind of judgement. The two newish prospects will deffo stay. Elliott is quite old and may be on a season long contract, thus he may go. Robson has done just enough thus far to earn a new contract in my eyes.

So I believe: Elliott, Gibb, Bullock, Barron, Maidens all have a chance of going. Not that I want all of them to go but that's not my decision and I'm glad I'm not a manager.

However, with Maidens is too early to make a prediction. He could force his way in for all we know, especially if Brown is played up front.

Edit: Tom Haigh is a new prospect as MadJohn says.

the future for players at Pools seems to be that the best ones will be cherry-picked by Championship sides (at the least) if we stay in League One. As we produce and subsequently sell more James Browns, Gary Liddles etc we will have to replace those players with equal quality, if we want to continue at the level we are at.
Assuming of course that we are not already competing at Championship level ourselves, in which case we'll keep hold of them in future!! We would still need the other young stars in the squad as back-up, if we went up another level. Fielding a weakened side against teams up there would be fatal.

Again, an easy solution Louise..don't read those threads.

Why DO people do this? banghead

Just so I've added to this thread, are people writing Matty Robson off too early? confised

I suspect she was giving an opinion like any other, not requesting advice. But we can always ask her....Louise?
