Congrats to you and the mrs PIN, looks like you will be about a month behind me and the wife then, we had our 20 week scan this morning and it was superb.

Right, Mrs R and I haven't yet got kids so I know I don't fully understand this stuff right, but why is a scan superb? And why do people actually look forward to guaranteeing to be woken in the night every night, not have a sleep in for years and severely limit your ability to go and get drunk on the spur of the moment? Am I not normal in not being overly excited by the idea?

Seeing the scan shows you how much it has grown since the last one and shows that it is actually real, plus you get to see it moving about which i think is superb.

So- is it worth all that chew in the end then?

Well, I envy Mr & Mrs N and Mr & Mrs Fens, especially now that my 'baby' is nearly grown up and about to flit off in a year or two. Can't imagine what life would have been like without her really. The only bad baby-bit, for me, is the first few months of never getting enough sleep (sometimes not getting any sleep!)

Still not all that keen on other people's children, tho!

tbh, I found the whole birth thing really stressful - esp jack who had the chord round his neck so everytime she contracted it choked him....they had to whip him out via a section,when he came out he was basically dead and the nurses got him going. it was awful

I am not too keen on other peoples babies either, we went to the wifes cousins the other week and she has a 6 week old baby, she passed it to me and I was bored shitless, I tried prodding it to make it do something but ishe just slept. I much prefer them when they get to about 1 year old so you can start playing games with them and they respond to you as well.

So the conclusion is I ought to kind of stay out of the way until it gets a bit older and more interesting?

What you want to be doing is sitting your baby on your lap as often as you possibly can and talking and singing and playing with him or her during his/her every waking moment when you're present. Do that and you will create a fantastic bond. It's easy for a mother to have that bond but requires much more of a conscious effort from a father.
