As part of a rivalry article I'm writing for another site, I was wondering, apart from the obvious locality of the two teams, why us and Darlo are such big rivals?

If any of you have any stories from way back when I'd be much obliged. I'm writing the article tonight so the sooner the better. If you have any other comments in regards to why the rivalry is so good/heart-rending/etc, just put it down. I want to put the rivalry on the map and, considering it's on an American website, I need to make the game sound particularly grand. :sweeeet:

probably due to locality and the fact that our history has run on a parallel with them
for most of our time we have both been the pooor relations of the football world with only sporodic highs to brag about

In part 4 the pic of Alan Murray looks a bit like Bobby Moncur?

On Pools v Darlo rivalry wasn't there a Poolie stabbed by a Darlo fan in the 70's or is that a myth.....

An interesting read but isn't that Bobby Moncur posing as Alan Murray on the last page?

Cheers. That looks cracking. I'll give you credit for anything I use if I do - I've got the most part written off the top of my head but that looks amazing.

If there's any more anecdotal stuff from any of you - examples of prime rivalry in the past, or defining moments, please tell me! :)

I guess the most notorious Pools/Darlo game was at Feethams in March 1978 just two days after Pools fullback Dave Wiggett had been killed in a car driven by Bob Newton. A fair number of Darlo fans chanted through the minute's silence before kickoff and the game was a very bad-tempered affair. There was a running battle throughout between Derrick Downing for Pools and Darlo's Lloyd Maitland. Downing was eventually sent off, and Maitland further infuriated the Pools fans by throwing away his black armband. Red cards were pretty rare in those days. It was only Pools' 12th since WW2, and was only the third time in Football League history that a side had won away from home after having a man sent off. A 17-year-old Keith Houchen got the winner.

Billy Horner pulled no punches, saying that the offending Darlo fans were "a disgrace to their club, their town, and the human race"

The irony is that the game in which we won 0-3 not so long ago also happened to be the 29th anniversary of that matchup!

Is it okay if I can use that story as part of mine? Full credit to you and ITMC of course

No mystery, plenty on here already know it. It's John Phillips

I never even knew that story - absolutely blown away by it. Pretty much filled in the grey areas of my article in that one paragraph!
