Mrs Kev has decided that she wants her Chinese computer on the net as well so we went and bought a Broadband Router.

Plugged it all in and neither of us can sign on through it. Hers says she's online but she just gets 404 and mine simply wont connect.

There's no software with it and even though the instructions are in Chinese I've followed the diagrams and as usual it says sign on for further instructions.

Mr kev,

you probably need a broadband service to be provided on the telephone line first, via your telecomm co or ISP.

2. Mr Dribble - First thing I did, everyone knows that one. However it hasnt got an on/off switch.

3. Mr Offshore, it's just Windows XP and TCP/IP on both computers.

4. Mr aptid, we've been on broadband for seven months. Just trying to get two computers to work down one line.

I'm pretty sure its nothing to do with protocols etc so lets start at the beginning:

I assume it was working fine before you started messing about with it?

Is it a router/modem or just a router?

The system works like this: modem connects to the internet - router 'routes' connection to computer.

The reason I ask the question is that if you are plugging your router straight into the phone socket it might fit but will not connect.

Edit: what make and model is the router?

Hard wired, fookoff Baptist!!

No, the router is plugged through the ADSL unit and the ADSL unit is plugged into the phone socket. All I did was take the adsl cable out of my computer, plugged it into the Tenda Multifunctional BroadBand Router WAN socket and then plugged my computer into line 1 and our rasses in line 2.

Is your router a wireless router?

If so I would have thought the connection from the telephone socket would go to the wireless router which normally have adsl modem and wireless router incorporated together.

1) Do the leds on the ports you are connected to flash when you are connected to the router directly, in as much at the pc sees the router? If so the pc to router physical bit is ok and the bit that needs attention is the router to adsl modem.

2) Is the lead from the adsl modem to the router the same lead as used to connect from the adsl modem into your computer? Is there an adsl present or carrier detected led lit. If yes the physical bit from the router to the adsl modem is also probably good.

Once the physical connections seem ok the more configurable stuff follows for example

The windows or other firewall on your pc's may need to be configured to allow traffic in from the router

and/or

The router may need to be configured to see the ip address of your isp.

does your pc work?

if so take yours out and see if your rasses works on its own

if not go into cmd prompts and see if you can ping router - ie the computer can talk
to the router - to find out this do ipconfig and then ping the number that appears as the default gateway.

if it does come back wi no packet loss then open up browser and enter the default gateway ip address it should bring up a settings page for you to check that your settings are right for your router and pc.

Isn't Baptist a bounder?? Even his mother hates him since she caught him in bed with his Dad.

I've tried 198.168.2.0 which came from the Router manuals along with 225.225.225.0, no luck.

I'm using an automatic setting for IP and DNS, works fine with me connected but won't let the router in.

Might bin the bastard and bollock our rass for messing with the status quo, birds eh??......

192.168.2.0 doesn't sound right. In a network, the first and last addresses are the network itself and the broadcast address.
Try http://192.168.2.1, but more likely are http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1
If it is doing dhcp, if you go to a command prompt and type ipconfig, it should list your own ip address, which will start with the same 3 numbers, so something like 192.168.0.2 if the router is 192.168.0.1
The other address you tried looks like a netmask, which also doesn't look right.
It probably should be 255.255.255.0

Set up IP address is 198.168.1.1, that's what got me on China net in the first place. I just can't seem to configure the bloody router. I stupidly thought it'd just dial the same number a. through the router and b. through the ADSL modem.

It could be that the adsl modem and the router are set to use the same ip address, which is not good!
How do you connect when you just use the adsl modem?
Is there a setup page at 192.168.1.1 on it into which you put a username and password?

No, the router is set for 198.168.2.0, the 198.168.1.1 is for the modem.

On a straight connection it just goes through the protocols set up for the ADSL in the Broadband software.

Can you access the modem on 192.168.1.1 when connected through the router?
On a straight connection, how does the broadband connection software work?
Do you need to run it every time first to make the connection, or does it just setup your browser connection parameters?

A. Yes
B. Dunno, I just click 'Broadband Connection' and then 'connect.' It's ID'd and passworded
C. It's manual, not automatic or pre-set.

A means your router is working correctly, but is blocking the 'Broadband Connection' application.
It probably has a firewall, which might be what's blocking it.
If so, try turning it off just to check.
Also the router may have some setup options on the wan connection. If it does, put in your id and password there.

That my friend is the likely problem. Like I said there's no software with it and when I tried to download some drivers they come down as an RAR file which is incomplete and therefore won't open.

Piece og Hong Kong shit, I might throw it at the wall!!

you should be able to access the default gateway address in your browser.

there is also a possibility that you can access the config page via chungchung.lan ie the make of the router.lan - this works with some brands

what makeand model is it??
