Is your band going to be at the Saltburn festival next week? If so where and when and what is it called?

A motley crew of us is going over there (on the Saturday, I think)

Well, no. Not a carnation exactly. Could wear me Pools scarf but it'll be too hot probably. Anyway, might recognise you from your photo and you might recognise Kev's brother as he looks a bit like Kev, apparently. This is all sounding a bit random but expect it will be OK on the day sctatchinghead

PS Are you a third of 'Sarah, Kieran and Ben' ?

You missed the 20 minute pre amble explaining what the song is about (as no one can decipher the lyrics), it's history (dating back to early settlers in Ruratania) and the traditional instruments it is being played on (sticks, whistles and bells + possibly a lute). Having said that I like Vin Garbutt.

I used to like the Fairports when the late Sandy Denny was in the band and also liked the band she was in after that - Fotheringay. I never considered either band to be in the 'traditional' folk mould as they used electric guitars and plenty of effects. Even when Dave Swarbrick joined the Fairports he used lots of effects on his violin.
When I played in a band a long time ago we were playing the Greyhound in Fulham (not far from Craven Cottage) and we got a call saying that a band had pulled out of the Speakeasy & could we get up there after our gig. We duly obliged and in the audience were Sandy & most of the Fairports plus John Peel.

Why is it that talent like Sandy Denny die so young, she was only 31, although some will say her lifestyle was the cause.

Who knows where the time goes?

Salty, I know ball-all about folk. Tell me kind Sir, what's the crack?

the crack is, I love a good sing song, a HUGE chorus like we got tonight at the cons club courtesy of the Wilsons [of Billog]....its just unbeatable to me
like a Teesside male Welsh voice choir or summat

Just the sound of a 100 men singing with harmonies, it honestly blows me away

When I was in the RAF in the '70s at RAF Leeming, just outside of Northallerton, we had a parade for some reason which I can't remember now. But we had the pipe band down from RAF Kinloss in Scotland, playing the accompinament to our marching about during the day. At night in the NAAFI the Pipers came in to the bar, to play us a little music. They positioned themselves around the walls of the room, and blew us away with 20 or so Bagpipes, it was the most amazing sound I have ever heard, talk about a 'wall of sound'. Amazing Grace will always bring back memories of that night, truly amazing.

Well, I didn't spot Salty, even tho I tied me Pools car scarf to me bag for easy recognition....thought it would be a dead cert that. So, anyway, I had to drink the pint myself. The singarounds on Sat afternoon were v. good.
Bit disappointed with Nebula in the evening.....had kept hearing how good they were, and so they were good but nothing out of the ordinary.

More folk in Durham at weekend

Oh right, Mr Poolpower. Didn't see anyone who looked anything like that I don't think.

anyway, at Durham next weekend is something called Folkworks Durham Gathering ( )

We've just booked for the Sat night concert at the methodist church...mainly to see Nancy Kerr and James Fagan, and also Andy May.

I remember being in the Greyhound Pub in Fulham in 1989 - just.
I was very very drunk, and very young.
It was packed out and I was in the middle, swaying, holding my pint, thinking I shouldnt be here, I need to lie down, I need to lie down, I need to......
And then it happened. I lent forwards and was sick into this mans coat pocket.
He was stood in front with his back towards me, didnt even notice.
I turned round and walked out quick, images a blur, bumping into people; somehow got the tube or taxi back home.
I've often wondered how he came to realise what had happened.

Thank goodness that wasn't my coat pocket.

I used to practically live in the Greyhound and we played there regularly. They had live bands on 7 nights a week and in the 70's it was free entry and drinks were not any more expensive than anywhere else. Many bands played there and later became famous - Roxy Music, Thin Lizzy, Brett Marvin & the Thunderbolts (became Terry Dactyl & the Dinosaurs) and even Shaking Stevens and the Sunsets.

Really great night at the Nursery last night. They've started their folk club again on Mondays, but as someone on this board said recently, not many people seem to have found out about it yet so the audience is small. Fantastic, friendly musicians...I'd go every week if I still lived in Pool.

if you like folk at all, go and see them
