I went to Pools today to get my ticket for the Alkmaar game on Wednesday, when I looked at the back there is a 10% discount for Burtons in the town centre, yet the expiry date is 31st May 2007

Yeah I think Tandy was situated where the card shop is now.

Anyone remember fine-fare, Gateway etc where Westgate's is now. Lol, those were the days. Oh and those round concrete benches, oh and the big hoover machines that look like noo-noo from teletubbies.

And the circular ramp.

The flowerbeds outside Woolworths.

The open roof.

The busker.

One of the Lee brothers asking for money to buy a tin of gas.

Whitakers with the bog eyed old shop bird was always good for a laugh, as was Dixons sports shop next door with all the patches and badges they used to sell.

one of the town's sport shops had a woman with a glass eye. Might have been Dixons, next door to where Halifax is now.

Wasn't that Barretts? With Stylo up on the other corner not far from where Hungry Jacks is now, I think there's some kind of playstation game type of shop there now? Or was that Shoefayre?

Tell you what else was cool too. We used to go and get the big shop at Asda on a Thursday night and park in the "Underground" car park so had to walk back through the shopping centre. All the shops used to have sort of hallways into them instead of flat shop fronts and as a nipper they used to seem sooooo long! Running in and out of those in the dark while the parents were struggling with the shopping bags and couldn't keep a grip of you was ace!

When I was a postie we used to park on the ROOF of the shopping centre and deliver mail at the back of the shops. It's a whole different world up there (or was).

The Central Stores and Delta were a pain in the hole when we were kids as my mother would always want to go there when we went shopping and with little legs they seemed like MILES away! And she banked with Co-Op bank which was on about the top floor of the Stores which she made us use the stairs to get to too.

But the toy department in the stores at Christmas was cool!

At some point in the eighties they "cut off" the underground bit for whatever reason, but you could still look down there, like some sort of deserted no-go area...very odd. Why DID they shut it when we've got nash-all Car Parking spaces in Hartlepool??

I think it was more late 70s, as I remember them closing it off when we used to get the big shop from the little Asda. Like you say, you could look in but not go in. Me and my brother always used to leg off in front and stare down there thinking that there might be ghosts or monsters in there and that was why they had closed it!
