Forthcoming government legislation means that owners of financially failing football clubs will be forced to sell to avoid the situation in which Morecambe and Sheffield Wednesday find themselves.

I would love to see it but the nagging doubt in my mind is forcing somebody to put a club up for sale is only the beginning. It could bring up all sorts of legal wrangling. So once again the winners would be the lawyers.
Will there be a mechanism to determine it's value for a start because if there isn't the owner can slap whatever price he likes on the sale.
The owner of Sheff Wed for instance bought the club for around £37 million but has just turned down an offer of £40 million to sell it.
There's a helluva lot of T's to cross and I's to dot before this becomes workable.
The whole process starts with the question has the club been mis managed to the point of a financial crisis, so if it was Pools the owner would say there's no crisis here, everybody gets paid on time and bills are paid on time. Not being able to get back to the EFL won't be classed as a crisis by the regulator but it's a crisis to us lot. The major talking point amongst the fans is progress or lack of it.
Whereas it's a step in the right direction, it will take a lot of working out.

How many clubs arent financially failing without massive input from their owner or owners?
Even the model run at Darlo is reliant on the owners putting in chunk of money each season.

Do they put the money in as a "gift" or a loan to be repaid ?

Not many gift their money to football clubs. Ryan Reynolds has just had about £30m back in loan payments from Wrexham who have new investment from the States.

Maybe it will make Raj think twice before issuing the threat to stop funding the club at the end of the season as he did earlier this year.

The politicians are after a cost-free PR win by seeming to promise the earth on 'bad' club ownership while there's no small print for the lawyers to argue over.

Starmer himself has been at it today, according to The Independent.

“In relation to Morecambe, I’m very concerned about the situation, and urge all concerned to do the right thing to ensure that we get the outcome that every Morecambe fan, every football fan wants, which is a thriving and successful club.”
“It is really important. These are pride of place issues and whether it’s Morecambe or other clubs, we have to do everything we can to make sure that they’re not just surviving but they have the opportunity to thrive.”

All blather yawn1

Asked if the government would consider stepping in, Sir Keir said: “Look, there are already discussions going on. There is a way through this and I’d urge everyone to do the right thing blah blah blah..."

The national press is as bad, trying to arm twist Tyson Fury to buy the football club. stpid

None of them is asking how the feck, if Morecambe FC had new owners tomorrow (7th August), they'd be able to start clearing a backog of fixtures in the NL in less than a fortnight's time. Maybe do it like a golf handicap? They can start every game they play in August with a 3 goal lead, 2 in September, 1 in October...

All over the media and in the accounts that Wrexham paid back all loans to Reynolds and McElhenney. Income was up hugely due to a successful season, new partnership with American investors and agencies, installation of a temporary stand to allow bigger attendances. Club is debt free to shareholders now.

is it actual money being paid back or in the form of shares in the club.

feel football is in a bigger financail mess than it was 40 years ago when most clubs only got a small percentage of fans as they do now who paid much less. its the cost of football itself to clubs that is the main problem. wages for players is ott and all the extra backroom staff they feel they should employ does not help either. know some are part time but still have to be paid for. when you hear of div.1 clubs having about 300 of these on there books you know there is a problem. if team A does something then team B and the rest follow because A saw fit to do it. you hear tales of 50 and 75 million transfer fees but only words for clubs in trouble.

Owners put the money in as loans as i think it makes sense for taxes. I don't see how an owner can be forced to sell and under what circumstances? If it is for any club that loses money then that is almost every club.

If a club or company cannot pay its bill, wages, etc it can go into administration.
One of the options available to the administrators is to put the club/company up for sale. That could be a reason why Raj changed his mind about withdrawing funding at the end of last season.

you would think most owners of clubs would only be happy to sell clubs on if its costing them money and there is nothing in it for them. if a true fan bought there club i cannot see why they,d want to hang around if a new buyer was knocking on there door who might do a better job.

It looks like Government would have to be the owner of the last resort, or a proxy of government. If no-one can/wants to buy the club when it enters administration then the club effectively becomes nationalised with Government offering the club for sale for a maximum period of time. If still no buyers then the club folds. A bit of a minefield and potentially open to abuse and accusations of state aid.

May be if an owner is Threatening/Putting a club into Admin when there is a viable alternative (Buyer).
