Having watched the Sweden game, i would of hooked Carter off after 15 mins as she was a liability.

seems the lasses are getting upset about the comments about them and more racism coming into it. is it them, the keyboard warriors or those pushing there game for to much are the ones to blame the most.

doubt any of the womens international team care anything about morecambe mens team. in the same way i doubt a morecambe fc fan cares a jot for them. more or less it two separate sports away from the bbc anyway.

She is Dutch, Jamie, so even though she could be given an award, she cannot use the title.
But I see where you are coming from, if they give one to Southgate for failing, then one must be given for winning!

Indeed, because as any Guardian reader or BBC employee will tell you, the achievements are directly comparable. It is really tough to win anything in the womens game just like it is in mens football.

It's unbearable for most of the time to be honest. It seemed to me that the Italians threw it away rather than England winning it. Riding their luck again - their name must be already on the cup.

England were the better team throughout but Italy gave them a helluva shock. This is knockout football so anything can happen so credit to the lasses. It's different to men's football but they're doing well in their form of the game.

Typical Italian approach to football, score 1 then park the bus. They can have no complaints - they're time wasting and shithousery was embarrassing, which started straight after they scored in the first half.

Uncle Darren would have been proud of their 'teamsmanship' before losing in the last minute!
I'm so glad, he is nowhere near our club this summer. Difference is we'd have probably had at least two sent off, playing Snarl ball.

Fortunately for our chicks- the ref had a decent game and was fully aware of what they were up to. Must admit I rather enjoyed seeing the Ities crying only minutes after they'd been celebrating a win! Their manager was a right bellend too.

Comes into occasional focus at events like this …..but under the general radar most of the year round except on the BBC…rather like tennis’s annual bonanza airing for two weeks when those tennis courts deserted all year round become momentarily popular…then slip quietly into the background.
Mind you, apart from Goat Wrestling and butterfly Caber Tossing it’s one of the few sports the BBC have to offer so they’re gonna hype it up.
No thanks, carry on, but not my cup of tea.

same for me. was never interested in schools or under 18 mens youth football either unless i was a match official getting paid for it or my lad was playing. bit like lasses football. decent but not the same as the adult mens game. that i want to watch. actually if the bbc had not hyped the lasses up as much i might have tried it but certainly not now. if that organisation asked me to scratch my arse with the right hand i,d use the left.

Yes, I agree with the above. Women’s football is entertaining and slightly chaotic and those not watching IMO are missing out. The commentating is hyperbolic but it is in men’s football too and I mute the sound if it gets too bad, it’s not needed, you don’t get constant babbling when you watch a live game at a ground.

The England Women have 4 or 5 good players, including the new keeper, but the team isn't the best and their manager is channelling the spirit of Ronnie Mooore. Every knock-out game is a Great Escape.

Wiegman must have balls of steel hidden under her trackie - leaves it till the 82nd minute to bring on her best striker, who equalises in the sixth minute of extra time!

Have really enjoyed the tournament. It's got a lower league vibe, in that it's less predicable than men's tournaments, there are mistakes as well as skill - not too far removed from watching Pools. The England team have shown tremendous fitness to hang in there and get games over the line. I worry about them against Spain, who are technically much better but who knows? I don't think we've played our best yet either.
I also like what was said above about being inspirational for girls watching it. Look at how many girls teams played at the Vic for the youth alliance day. It's brilliant that so many girls have the opportunity to play now, which anyone with a daughter would particularly appreciate.
This is a team representing England, so I'd find it odd if any Englishman wasn't supporting them. They've got to their third final in a row, at a time when the standard of football is getting better every season. Great achievement and great entertainment.

Good on them wanting more exposure for the Women's game, but let's be honest it's f*cking awful to watch in terms of footballing ability.
Certainly not worthy of a prime time prime channel slot imo.

Worth a primetime spot for the drama though. And something like 8 million watched it live, so a massive success for itv. Clearly a lot of people enjoy it.

I've watched quite a bit of the wimmens Euro tournament and have to agree that the standard has improved over recent years. It's still nowhere near that of the mens game but it's at least watchable these days. Having said that, I thought that both semi finals were absolute borefests and I fully expect today's game to be similarly tedious, although the same could be said of the mens Euros of course.

As for popularity, tonights game will obviously attract millions of viewers but I've been up and down the country over the last three weeks and have not seen a single England flag sticking out of a car, not even today, Finals Day. If the men's team even qualify from the Group stages the flags and banners are out in force across the land which indicates to me that Joe Public is not quite as enthusiastic as the media hype would have us believe.

That is absolutely disgusting.

They own England now.
Sad as fcuk but true.

Probably get a name change in years to come.

It's low standard stuff and some of the comments bulling the games up are cringe worthy, but good on them getting to the final, I enjoyed the last hour of the semi final.

I hope we win it. But I also dread to think if we do because the bbc and radio will bull women's football up to be something it isn't.

Would rather watch the Lions play. Its bad its all behind a pay wall and i aint seen anything of it. Surely this should be on terrestrial.
Time for some government action.

There is always a highlights package on You Tube. Obviously not as good as watching it live but at least you see the tries.

Thats right. Apart from Arsenal Women, the WSL teams survive on sub 5,000 gates and lean very heavily on money from the men's teams. There is quite simply not the interest in women's football however hard the BBC try to push it. Having said that, I have nothing against it and will watch the final. I just object to all the politics. For example almost no men involved in the coverage but when its the men's Euros they cant wait to pack in as many women as possible so you get retired England women footballers being pundits on the men's game.... a game they have never played. Then you get the usual suspects telling us how the women are better than the men because they won the last Euros and got to the Womens World Cup final and now the current Euros final. As if the competition is exactly the same as the men's. The fact is there is only a handful of top tier womens teams in Europe unlike in the mens game were there are plenty so the competition is very tough. Anyway, good luck to them.

One of the radio stations now has live updates at the games, the northern league probably has more people interested in it.

Fantastic from the lasses! Loved it when our keeper came out with ‘we’re English and Never Say Die!’ Can get right behind that. They never know when they’re beaten that lot.
Anyway, great that we have another tournament win for the country to celebrate. We need a bit of joy right now.

'England' - collectively - are definitely NOT great at winning football. However, the England womens team have certainly found a way to win tournaments, despite not having either the best team or the most cultured players. I thought Spain were easily the better footballing side tonight but they were absolutely clueless upfront. England to their credit dug in and battled through 90 minutes plus extra time, both sides scoring with free headers. Spain were as toothless in the shootout as they were in open play and the England keeper made their efforts look puny.

So, congratulations to the lasses on their latest success - if only someone could instil the 'We're English and Never Say Die' mentality into their male counterparts, 60 years of hurt without a single triumph to celebrate.
