My old girl has her own bungalow but because she started to show major signs of ( Alzimers ) her doctor thought it be best to get her fulltime care 24 hrs a day for upto 3 months to access her condition properly. The doctor had said its probably due to the fluid in her legs getting infected. This apparently can case the same reaction as Alzimers sctatchinghead This was 3 months ago and they told two of my brothers at the time that she will be not be expected to pay as long as she can return home in the 3 month period. ( I am no expert but I thought that sounded strange ). Anyway her condition is getting worse by the day it's crazy. Out of 7 days she has 6 going off it and the other perfect. Just been up to see her and one of these two brothers was also there and he told me he had received a bill of over £18,000 for this 3 months. Before I ring the NHS does anyone on here think this sounds right sctatchinghead If it's correct then the doctor either lied or my brothers misunderstood. No way will this be allowed to contine at those stupid costs. I would rather sell her bungalow and move her in with us not ideal but crazy to pay £ 65,000 a year thats soon to be increased by our amazing leader Starmer. banghead It's not that I don't want to pay but more to do with the huge payments for NHS when they got told there would probably be no cost. And going forward if this cost needs paying what would it cost to go private. sctatchinghead No wonder Raj is buckled. banghead

Not certain Mate, But i "Think" a care home is about 5 Grand a month, So 24Hr care (live in) could really be costly especially, But i could be way off the mark.
All the very best Leggie, Could be going that way with a family member ourselves.

Thanks Gray appreciated. Hope your family avoid it mate it's extremely tuff to see a loved one who sometimes doesn't even recognise you never mind your name. And sad to see them ball n shout and swear at people for simply helping or walking past the room. My mother is not religious in any way and the only member of our family to never ever swear. But now is 10 x worse than Chubby Brown. The best of luck to you and your loved one.

They strip you of all your money and assets, barstewards.
If you have to go in , they soon harvest your money…not that many years ago this cash cow service was provided by the Council…..our old girl went in and everything was gone in months.

After personal wealth is down to 23k you can then apply for deferred payments were by you pay a reduced amount and when they die you pay the rest on death and sale of their house.

When my mam died, she owned her house, she had just over 2 k left in the bank after care home costs….I never found out what happened to fpher state pension which must surely go towards costs.

We are slowly being weaned off the welfare state.

makes me wonder where they get those fees from. those working in them are not exactly in the super tax bracket and i,d guess the food provided is quite small and basic. then supply and demand come into it where i doubt nowadays there will be many permanent empty beds.

fast forward a few years if this country gets any worse most will enter care with them owing the bank rather than having something in it.

Been through this too, though 'luckily' it was 12 years ago and Durham County Council was still picking up most of the cost of my mum's care. £5k a month is an absolutely eye-watering amount. It's tough enough as it is having to witness what Alzheimer's does to someone you love.

Of course if your parents have saved nowt and are worth nowt, it costs nowt. As Wee Bobby Thompson used to say, "Get some debt!"

If you have a relative over 60 living in the same house as someone entering a care home, they will disregard the house when looking at the finances. Anyone you have to move in? Maybe get a relative to move in to help with the care.

Also push for continuing care, NHS will fund all of the care, do this the moment the person is told they need to go into a care home.
They are very strict and you need to be at the meeting to argue your case, appeal if it fails and again and again.

I managed to save the house and pushed for the NHS to pay, took me 3 goes.
My elderly relative initially was assessed on income because of me living in the house so that went to the care costs minus £30 or so for living expenses. Eventually NHS paid after my appeals were successful.

Not so lucky on the another relative who went into a care home, sudden decision by the social worker, one day at home, the next in the care home after a fall. Had to sell the house and deferred the payment while sale took place, make sure the council do not try and add interest on. Council tried that one after the house had sold, good job I had an email stating that no interest would be charged. Still cost £60k in care fees, failed twice in my appeal for NHS care but with my relative deteriorating so badly, even though I had lost the appeals, it became a medical care situation which meant the NHS had to pay.

Not nice on the relatives at all to go through these money worries with the worry of a loved one on your mind.

hard to imagine at the time that you could get good advice from a bobby thompson act. he made more sense than some of todays politicians.

Makes you wonder why they’re pushing these euthanasia bills though…now call me a cynic ….but when it does become law, the figures could be very interesting.

sounds as if they have there rules and regs but its up to you to fight for your rights. surely thats not right as everything should be given without asking or fighting for it. no wonder people are bitter having to do this when others enter this country for everything thrown at them with a load of helpers on top of all that.

there will be some with elderly parents who cannot wait for it to go through to get there hands on everything they can before its flittered away on care home costs. do not say that will not happen as i know of someone moaning like hell about inheritance because there parents had the cheek to go on an expensive cruise. its funny though how immigrants never seem to have these problems as they are quite happy in caring for there old folk and have a much higher regard for them as the government and our reletives have for ours.

It all depends whether you are in a home which has beds at the price paid by the Council. We are currently going through this with my mother.

The home she is in is £1750 a week but the Council funding is only £975 (including a £220 weekly contribution from my mam's pension).

We started looking for another home in August when my mam's savings from the sale of the house dropped under £25k. 7 months later we are still searching for that new placement and her savings have basically gone (fortunately the Council contributions were backdated so she ended up with a credit balance of about £9k). The Social Care team are basically useless with helping us and just send a list of homes and their prices and you are on your own. I have a call with the home today where they will try to get me to sign a Route 4 contract which means I will be responsible for my mam's bills until we find her a new home.

It's been a nightmare for our family and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy but I hope things go a bit smoother for you Leggie

I spoke with a solicitor a while back, things might have changed since then, I was going to sign my property over to my daughter, it’s classed as a gift, she would have to charge me the going rate for rent. If you die within 7 years my daughter would have to pay CGT at 40%,bearing in mind if I fell out with her she could evict me. The other thing is her husband if they split up which they did he could be entitled to 50% of the value of the property. You come into this world with nought but could go out in debt.

Interesting about the food Accy. I asked the manager what I was aloud to bring in food wise because she keeps saying she is hungry the portions are tiny etc. The manager said we don't encourage you bring in anymore than a few bags of crisps or a bar of chocolate a week however you can bring in fruit drinks etc no problem. It's now making me wonder why sctatchinghead Could it be they are afraid of us saying take the food off the bill we will provide the food. Which no doubt would be a huge monthly saving for the family. sctatchinghead

they,ll be running the place like a cafe charging over a tenner for a couple of quids worth of food every meal. no wonder people see profit as a dirty word and think everyone has a fiddle now.

Sliding scale from 7 years, Jamie:

Taper relief only applies if the total value of gifts made in the 7 years before you die is over the £325,000 tax-free threshold.

Taper relief

3 to 4 years 32%
4 to 5 years 24%
5 to 6 years 16%
6 to 7 years 8%
7 or more 0%

And there are ways of just getting your daughter to own the house, nothing to the husband if there is a divorce.

Yes it is a minefield but it can be done.

Leggie was it a NHS bed in a care home? A doctor can put someone in straight away and has the authority to do so.
It is the same as being put into hospital or being moved from ward to ward. It is funded by the NHS so no charge should be asked for.

If it was private, then a contract would be signed after an assessment by staff in the home, did anyone sign a contract to state that she was being put in the care home privately? Relatives have to be informed at all times and one of them would have had to sign the contract.

From what you have said, if the doctor put her in a home, it was no different to her being put into a hospital bed.

Any more news?

Leggie was it a NHS bed in a care home? A doctor can put someone in straight away and has the authority to do so.
It is the same as being put into hospital or being moved from ward to ward. It is funded by the NHS so no charge should be asked for.

If it was private, then a contract would be signed after an assessmentt by staff in the home, did anyone sign a contract to state that she was being put in the care home privately? Relatives have to be informed at all times and one of them would have had to sign the contract.

From what you have said, if the doctor put her in a home, it was no different to her being put into a hospital bed.

Any more news?

Yes it's was NHS. When I get my information from them I will P.M you mate

there will be some with elderly parents who cannot wait for it to go through to get there hands on everything they can before its flittered away on care home costs. do not say that will not happen as i know of someone moaning like hell about inheritance because there parents had the cheek to go on an expensive cruise. its funny though how immigrants never seem to have these problems as they are quite happy in caring for there old folk and have a much higher regard for them as the government and our reletives have for ours.

Good point Accy, how it used to be.

I'm sure most of us of a certain age will remember back in the day, when you or your mates great grandmothers ( great grandads were usually dead, accident at work or killed in the war etc ) lived in the same house as one of their children. As kids my great grandmother lived with my Nanna and Grandad until she died. When my Great Grandad died, the colliery house went with him, so she was effectively homeless. Some peoples homes were like lodging houses, with all manner of Grandparents and Aunties living in them. Imagine that ? must have played havoc with their sex lives etc and though they seemed old at the time, they'll have only been in their late 40s/early 50s.

Getting their state pension in return must have been a small consolation, but that's how it was then, harder times, simpler times but I would say much happier times.

funny how that was the norm with them living alongside families with more kids that they have now in houses no bigger than there are now. thing is this is still happening but mainly its asian families who do it who respect the old far more than we do and our government.

The families of today have bigger houses now which are more than capable for an elderly relative but unfortunately both are out at work and couldn’t provide the care our parents did for their elderly relatives.

Not sure that applies to everyone Jamie, but no doubt some will. I'd have thought if you were that skint, you'd want to put up an elderly relative, but not sure how claiming benefits would impact on that, maybe this is what you are referring to?

My worry, in future is that young people are not buying houses, and are living in rented flats/rooms in their 30s and are not getting married either. As a society we are storing up trouble, in the main, because in the last 40 years, we've allowed the rich to asset strip the country and get richer as a result, whilst the rest of us have become poorer, this is a ticking timebomb, and future generations will have to face the consequences. We'll be dead by time the shit hits the fan, but being old and poor in the future doesn't sound like its going to be much fun.

the rich need to get into this care home lark as in the future they,ll make raj look like a pauper. all the immigrant labour available at possibly sweat shop wages that i feel they,ll get away with in the future and a never ending list of applicants for places in these homes. be a win win for em all.
