Last one 1957.

Did you know that football matches used to take place on Christmas Day?

See BBC Sounds "Radio Tees" with Rob Law.

1957.....York City at home on the 25th, York City away 26th.
They didn't half cram the games in back then, six games played between 21st Dec and 4th Jan

All stats thanks to Mad John and his amazing "In The Mad Crowd"

be interesting to see how many team changes there were in all those games. as a kid we seemed to have the same team out for nearly every game. now teams are worried in playing saturday/tuesday and thinking about freshening things up.

can remember the york game clearly. not for the game or our opponents but the big row at mid day when my ma shouted at us that we were more interested in getting to the match than the dinner she slaved over for ours only to watch us wolfing it down quickly. wonder how many other households suffered the same. made it worse later by watching a rugby league christmas day fixture unril they were stopped/

And Pep at Man City says there should be a winter break because there are too many games over the Festive period.

this crops up in the premier league every time a team has to play more than one game a week. they do not understand the culture of the british football fan and never will. thing is we atre not as important as we once were to clubs even if they are happy to fleece us of our money.
