Big Brother and the N word....

Considering the context of the use of the word nigger on Big Brother. Did the lass that used it deserve to be chucked out or was it an over reaction?

I'm trying really hard not to watch this schite and am annoyed with myself for switching it on last night but....

That Charley motorgob said to her after she said it 'I use the word nigger because thats ok, I am a nigger'.

So, basically black people can call each other niggers and not have a problem with it, black people call themselves niggers and don't have a problem with it. So surely in this context there is no harm in a white person calling a black person a nigger?

I completely agree. Why should it be ok for them to call each other, but then as soon as a white person says it it become a racial issue! I personally don't have a problem with anyone from a different race but it does annoy me when things like this happen as we always get penalised for saying things just because we're white - surely that's racist to us!

Don't think the issue is that she used it, very naively in fact, but that she used it on the telly. Opens all sorts of quicksand for Channel 4, so they went into damage limitation mode.

In actual fact, I just zapped a mosquito and it had more effect on the world than Big Brother ever will. It's just the idle watching the inadequate. :roll:

I don't watch it either, but my sister does. They're not allowed any reading or writing material.

niggers calling each other niggers and treating the word as a joke is their way of devaluing it and shoving it back up the whites' arses. They didn't invent the word did they.
On the other hand when a non-black calls a black a nigger it has to be assumed to be a racial slur unless there's serious proof to the contrary.

Think about it: you're comparing apples with oranges.

You've missed the point; it's not used loosely. It's an attempt to re-appropriate the word in a similar way to how queer has been re-appropriated.

The origins of some of these words are quite innocent, my understanding is that the original term was applied to people from Nigeria. Worthy oriental gentleman has been changed around to become a derogatory term also.
I wonder how long it will be before people are taken to court for using words like Yank, Redneck, Cloggie, Froggie, Jock, Taff, Yakker etc?? It will happen, it's just a case of when.
