Burger bar boss Chris Brown is being investigated by police for driving around in his Land Rover with a gollywog fixed to the front bumper.



A neighbour reported him for racist behaviour and two officers called round to his home, took snaps of the car and seized the soft toy.

Mr Brown, who was out on a motorbike ride when his gollywog was removed on Sunday, claims he now faces being prosecuted on a public order charge.

He has blasted the police action as "political correctness gone mad".

45-year-old tied the gollywog, which was sporting its trademark blue blazer and red trousers, to the front grills of his Land Rover Discovery.

Chris, from Haregate, near Leek, Staffs, who collects the toys, has now contacted his solicitor.

He said: "I was told the police had been taking pictures of my Land Rover and had also removed the toy from the vehicle.

"I rang the police and said that I had been told two police officers had stolen a toy from my vehicle.

"The officer then said he had been instructed to take it off, as someone had complained that it offended them.

"I find it strange that the police can remove items from your vehicle without contacting you.

"The police officer told me that he needs to talk to me about the toy. I understand they are considering a public order offence against me."

Shops selling gollies have recently been raided by police after complaints from members of the public.

A & E Pettifers in Bromyard, Worcs, placed three of the toys in their window and had their stock subsequently taken away.

Chris, who runs a burger business in Leek town centre, added: "This is just wasting police time.

"There are only a few police officers in the town, but instead of protecting the community, which has seen a lot of nasty crime over the last two years, they are confiscating toys from vehicles.

"I have spoken to the Race Crime Department, who said it was just a toy. The toys are selling very fast in a shop in Leek as people love them.

"Are we going to take all the Cindy and Asian dolls off the shelves in all the shops?

"Are we going to get rid of all black cats and what about the white milk bottles on the doorsteps of houses in the morning? Are they soon to be banned?

"This is not about race, it's about political correctness gone mad. In Leek we have about 40 nationalities, many of which are my friends, and we all get on great.

"Political correctness like this builds walls in the community.

"I always support the police in their job, but this does not gain public confidence in them, and was not very well thought-out. I am very disappointed and feel let down by their action. I have contacted my solicitors."

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "We are investigating a complaint from a member of the community regarding an object which has been attached to a vehicle which has caused offence and distress to a local resident.

"Officers have visited both parties involved and the item has been seized while the investigation continues.

"This incident has been reported to us as a racist incident and the local neighbourhood policing team are currently investigating the complaint."

Chief Inspector Martin Evans, who is responsible for partnerships and neighbourhood policing in the North Staffordshire Division added: "Any incident believed to be of a racist nature is taken very seriously.

"We are member of PARINS (Partnership Against Racist Incidents in North Staffordshire) whose work is focused on the need to increase the reporting of racist incidents.

"We are committed to serving all members of our community and we work to ensure that everyone can live without the fear caused by racist acts.

"Incidents like this are rare, particularly incidents like this which attract the attention of the media, however it is vital that all members of our community feel confident to report such incidents to the police."

Are gollywogs illegal to sell or to own in this country? As far as I know, they are not.

Why do the police zealously pursue any and all accusations of racism not directed at whites? Who do they consider is the victim in this case? Is there not a witch hunt under way in this country to try and find racism at every turn, even where none exists?

To those on this forum who poo poo the idea that PC exists and that it is a myth created by newspapers like the Mail, is this not a clear case of 'PC gone mad' and if not, why not?

I don't have any time for what they're doing, which is obviously over zealous and uncalled for, but I'd be curious to know why he felt the need to tie a golliwog to his front bumper in the first place unless he's driving a dustbin wagon, in which case they'd only be able to nick him once a fortnight.

Can't help thinking that these neighbors did not get on in the first place.

There can't be many people below middle age who would know what a golliwog was. Or a piccaninny.

We dont know the parties involved & we dont know the history leading up to this incident so no it is not a CLEAR case of anything.
I also find it hard to believe that tying a golliwog to the front grill of your land rover is the behaviour of a well balanced 45 year old man
