Had Ratboy down the vets as he’d tried to eat his way through the fence with next door to ‘socialise’ with their new cats and showing his girlfriend Ruby his version of social etiqueete.
In the process he cracked a tooth so down to the vets to have it removed….to cut a long story short …..it cost £500 plus.…….

Pet Insurance is the way forward, these days. £500 for a tooth extraction sounds horrendous.

Got pet insurance, but the fees with the firm I used kept going up by a large amount so as we were getting Ruby decided to shop about and got the same deal for two dogs at a third of the cost with a national company.
But as we’d just swapped over it made things difficult, so bit the bullet and coughed up.

Absolute rip off since Covid.
Charge about £35 just to go thru the vet doors now. Talk a bit of shite n call it consultation fees.

With Google I've managed to do me own vet skills.
Girl cat had gallstones but managed to break it up with syringe diluted Apple Cider Vinegar down her mouth for 3 days then back to normal.

Boy cat jumped on a hedgehog n split his toes open. Daily bathing in dilute dettol and fresh bandage for 7 days then back to normal.

UTP.

Nah, they’re my babies…and putting their head in a vice could have cosequeces …..I don’t mind pulling the wife’s teeth out, but that would be like taking a ride on an irritable tiger with an attitude….in other words am I tired of living.

depending on the size of the dog and its age it ends up not shy of a grand a year to insure. best way is just put the amount in a bank account for them once they get over a year old and top it up every year till you eventually have to use it. have always found dogs are like people going to the doctors. you go when you are young but most never visit again till they reach close to pension age. they charge these fees simply because they know you,ll beg steel or borrow for a pet, but the cynic in me always wonder why they ask if you are insured or not before they see you. i,d guess that 500 might be less than they charge the insurance company. politicians, estate agents and vets are all the same for me.

A vets degree is more difficult than a Doctor’s degree as they are not dealing with one type of ‘animal’ only the human being but do they play on the fact people are very compassionate about their pets.
We had a hamster when my daughter was a kid think a couple of pounds from Waltons in York Road, it developed a wheeze took it to the vets £20 for an injection, it had flu !

It's amazing how you can insure a 3 litre mercedes worth £10,000 for a year for less than half the price of a dog. Profiteering bastards the lot of em.

You should have bought it some Fisherman’s Friends and cut them down to Hamster scale1/36th…on the Hamster register.

Animals do not have an NHS so if you cannot afford pet insurance, you should not have a pet animal.

Your use of the word ‘pet animal’ tells me you are of the animal rights persuasion. It’s the little nuances that give you away.
I can afford the fees, but if if something’s excessive….. be it dogs, cars, Exocet missiles…I have a right to question it’s price and not just accept it.
My dogs are my friends, I give not a toss.

We regard our cats as companions and they deserve to be cared for when they are not in good health. That means being treated by a vet which is, as you, Snowy, have found, is expensive so insurance is essential imho.

Apparently there is going to be a regulator review looking at collusion between insurance companies and vets. Don't hold your breath though.

They are a crooked bunch, most vets - you can literally see the pound signs light up in their eyes, as soon as they mention the words, blood test or X-ray. The buggers have got you over a barrel emotionally - and they know it rakxe

The costs are vastly over inflated. The actual costs of xrays, blood test and basic medicines are no where near what is charged.
I used to cost them in a hospital and should have reduced.

I feel like I’m being given a lecture
I haven’t ’just found’ anything, I was between insurance providers and thought it unfair to expect my new insurer of one week to pick up the bill….call me considerate.
I get the distinct impression you think I’m complaining because I have to take responsibility for my dogs and nothing could be further from the truth.

A blood test is approximately £80.

i,m going back over 20 years now to when my sister had a retriever. 50p per tablet for a pain killer when more or less the same strength and ingrediants could be purchased at a corner shop for less than that for a full bottle of them. Fact so nothing is new but just getting worse.

I think Waltons in York Road used to be the pets pharmacy, I don’t think any of the staff at Pets at Home could offer any advice.

that would be like going into a garage though and asking the mechanic for advice on how to fix your car yourself.

No different from going to a Pharmacy and telling them your symptoms some thing the government are encouraging to counter the shortage of GPsi

My brothers wife give me some info about 12 months ago I think they bought the drugs online after going to the vets and asking what the problem was . Getting a price and description. Saved a fortune. Miss my 2 cats leaving them in England. Cried my eyes out. They didn’t deserve my selfishness

On the news this morning where some vet quoted £68 for medication which could be bought in a pharmacy for £3-50.

In my past employment I used to order probe cleaner for chemical analysis of water.
£88 for a 22 ml plastic bottle lasted a month.
I phoned up to place a fresh order and found that the staff were being made redundant basically by family and friends brought in by the new owners……she also told me the ‘special cleaner’ with the lemon paste was a popular toilet cleaning product retailing for a couple of quid for a litre.
I made her day by cancelling the contract.

Funnily enough as kids it was Monopoly….when you have brothers of a similar age + ginger it always ends in a fight and the Monopoly board scattered to the wind.
