Just been listening to pundits before Arsenal game on the ‘wireless’ asked where he thought Harvitz best position pundit replied left sided number 8!! Was that Tommy McGuigan’s position inside left.

Its lazyness or bollocks on their part or just trying to confuse those whose right back has the squad number 8. really there is a generation who have never encountered teams being numbered from 1 to 11.

I thought he played with 2 traditional wingers and a front man (centre forward type) giving him a 4-3-3 patern but that was my memory and of course I could be wrong.

even then the game was quite fluid and formations changed depending of the circumstances that games threw up. its never been a game of subbuteo where the lines never changed.

most hated expression that you seem to hear more and more is that a certain player is on fire. always get a mental picture of the head of fire fighting at a club ordering the extinguishers onto the pitch with the referees permission obviously.

Many years ago we had the deep lying centre forward with Don Revie and also the sweeper at the back of the defence.

Yes Tommy played inside left. My favourite ever Pools player. I know we have had loanees who have shone but they weren't ours and hasbeens who had seen better days. Although Tommy was a Scot, he loved Hartlepool. He was a Poolie in every sense of the word except birth. Very skilful, very creative and knew where the goal was. Loved watching him play and the team he played in. R I P me auld mate.
