Yet another mega scam on the World's population. Diamonds are worthless but because of the monopoly by a few companies who bought up all diamonds put them in storage then released only a small percentage each year making them very rare. Diamonds used to be sold to the rich people but the greedy owners decided to find a way to sell to everyone. In 1938 they created a selling slogan " Diamonds are forever " and started putting diamonds on more engagement rings. Prior to 1938 only 10% of engagement rings had diamonds but after the big promotion push it jumped to 80%. Diamonds are really one of the most common worthless stones on earth but clever greedy companies made sure they remained rare and expensive. We get scammed on all levels and always have been. rakxe

As has been evidenced by the demise of Rushden and Diamonds - they are not forever.

They just get replaced with a Phoenix club with 'AFC' before the old name.

that AFC thing is another load of bollocks. do anyone even there own fans use those letters to describe their club. doubt any shaymen call the club AFC Halifax. it will be either just plain halifax or town.

There is a very good documentary somewhere on youtube that does tell the story of the diamond trade and how an not so precious stone managed to make its way into becoming the expensive shiny bit of glass it is today. I think it was the world renowned Tiffany Brand from New York that had something to do with it. - its a very interesting watch.

there is others too about Coal and Oil and how it technically will never run out as the reserves in the Earth either replenish quicker than we are led to believe and also we cant be so naïve in thinking that basically what we see above the earth I.e the oceans, there is technically more Oil below. Mind boggling when you come to think of the volume !

at least a coal mine on your doorstep is a lesser blot on the landscape than hundreds of bird killing wind turbines. its just the job of mining it thats the problem unless someone came up with an idea of mining with less people doing the job.

Rarity is only one factor in the perceived value of "precious" metals and stones.

Cost of mining is another huge factor that indicates the "true" value, but this often isn't bothered about too much when working out how much you can get away with charging when selling it to the masses.

Gold and Silver are a good example of this. The logical and scientific price calculation would work out at Gold being worth around 20 times the value of silver. Gold is much rarer overall, but silver is rare nearer the surface of the Earth and thus mining costs are higher.

But add in the "desirability" and greed factors, and the market price of gold has been as much as 80 times that of silver over the years.

Fool and his money and all that...

Good luck with that - think they've gone as well

They were clearly bandits, after flogging all those diamonds!

Rust and Die - as some of the locals in my corner of Northants refer to them!

Aye they’ve gone as well, now it’s another bloody ‘convenience’ store  worst of all the new owners don’t give a toss about the iconic Lamb’s clock either as it’s now right only twice a day.
