Just wondering if a player has a long term injury like Dodds or Mancini, are their wages paid out of insurance or do Pools have to keep paying them even though they cant play? Obviously I dont begruge this, they cant help being injured. Just wondering? I know there are folks on here who know a lot about the professional game. Do all pro clubs have an injured player insurance scheme or does it depend on individual club? As I say just wondering.

When I was Secretary of a Midland Football League team there was a statutory requirement to have players' insurance.

We only had at any one time no more than 4 contracted players but we were still responsible for paying their "wages" if they were injured whilst playing for the Club.

Any monies from the insurance could be retained by the Club to offset any wages paid.

I see. So it follows that football clubs who have players under contract (in Pools case all 20 ish) must be insured against injury. Yep, I guess it makes sense. I guess Pools wont be getting a no claims bonus.

I also guess that knowing insurance companies the premium won't be cheap, especially in a supposedly contact sport.

Absolutely.

There were/are specialist Companies that are involved in insuring sports people and one thing I always tried to impress to non contracted players was the need to insure themselves.

Yes the premiums were not "cheap" but if you were, say, a self employed builder, with a family, and got a serious injury and couldn't work, this insurance was a life line.

Normally the insurance is for operations and private consultants.
All companies must insure their employees, that's the law, mainly liability reasons.

I don’t see why it shouldn’t be like any other employee, if you’re of sick you get paid, but as it’s a ‘work related injury, you definitely should be paid..but are the arrangements left to the club as to how they finance it.
That said, the money for the contract will already have been paid so surely any insurance should pay for the player brought in to cover for the injured player?

I was only discussing the Club I was involved with, where the majority of players were non contract and playing "for fun" with minimal weekly payments, some as little as £30. By being non contract they were allowed to move freely and for some, greater still, was to play on Sundays.

Remember the insurance for contract players was confined to playing/training & travelling for football games, so falling over the dog in your back garden and twisting your ankle would not be covered.

The finance for covering contracted players insurance and wages is just another expense which is covered by (in my instance) gate money, sponsorship deals and a very active social club with 2 bars and open 7 days a week, lunchtime & evening.

think it might be a reason that not all players can get a club because they just cannot insure them because of past injuries. have heard this a few times over the years where certain good players have to go part time because of this if they want to continue to play.

It's not a bad thing to have a full time job and then play at a decent level where their "wages" were/are 3 to 4 hundred quid a week.

I won't name the player but 30 years ago I knew a player, Accountant by trade, playing for Kiddy whilst they were non league but when they got promoted into the Football League, the Club wanted all their players to go full time.

He had a good salary and obviously "topped" up by his Kiddy earnings but did not wish to lose his Accountant's salary so joined, if I remember, Solihull who were still rising the ranks in the Midlands football scene.

did some scouting for a league club once and named a player to the manager. next time i saw him he said find out what they do outside football first as i do not like being laughed at as i could hardly match his part time wage never mind his full time job. it was back in the mid 80,s.

I broke my leg in two places playing football and was in plaster for four months ..didn’t get back to work for 6 months.
I was called in by the Chief Engineer (God)….and told simply..” No football anymore….. now clear off”
A master class in priorities and I obeyed.
