It's had its end knocked off. Painful.

What would happen if the Huegh totally collapsed, would it cause a problem for the town ?

It was built to protect the docks and the town. It disperses the power of the seas by reducing wave power hitting a bit further in.
It's name The Heugh Breakwater tells you all you need to know. Nowadays we break the waves by strewing the beaches with large rocks which allegedly do the same thing.
If the seas can knock lumps off the Heugh what would they do if it wasn't there.
Yes knock lumps off something else further in.

Not surprised - it's been neglected for years which is disgraceful.

Needs to be sorted out ASAP- as reckon the town would potentially flood in a bad storm, without it

Surprisingly, the Heugh was maintained by the old Hartlepool Council as opposed to West Hartlepool Council…and they did a smashing job.
The ‘experts’ say when it collapses the rubble will perform the same role  mind you, ‘experts’ designed the unsinkable Titanic.

I think its owned by PD Ports so unless it affects their profitability nothing will happen.
IMO it should have been maintained properly and opened up to anglers (on a membership or payment arrangement).

Apparently the costs of running the pier against the cost of buying a season ticket for ‘Rajfish’ , that and not spending on bigger fish and splashing the water angered some crab stranglers who have been picketing the Heugh shouting ‘Tide Out’.

The Heugh and Steetley's wooden pier. Two Hartlepool landmarks that must be saved. The Heugh was built for a reason. The destruction of Hartlepool. What next? The Plymouth post war build of Church Street? The destruction of HUFC?

The pier despite being made of Greenheart is in a terminally bad way.
I can see no role for it sadly, the cost of restoring it and future maintenance with no use/role to finance it doesn’t bode well.
I’m amazed a rock wall wasn’t laid on the seaward side of the Heugh to diffuse the impact and save the Heugh structure.
Dirty word maintenance nowadays.

Yes the Heugh as it might actually serve a purpose, Steetley pier no, it’s just a pile of rotting wood, let it fall into the sea, its not even architectural pleasing to the eye.
There was a fella on The Town of Hartlepool FB page trying to get a petition together to save the Steetley Pier.

Had a walk over the Headland this afternoon. The waves were crashing over the top of the Heugh, never seen the sea as rough in a long time. The Block Sands was covered in seaweed, sand & rocks, probably from last weeks storm. If the Heugh wasn't there, I dread to think the state it would be in, the waves would be straight into the Town Wall & the Marina. The council need to get some money spent & maintain the Heugh before it is too late!!

The money raised would be better spent on the Heugh.

The company i worked for years ago (Dutch Marine firm) had contracts through PD ports to inspect the breakwater (cant remember on what time cycle but im sure it was over years rather than yearly). They even used divers to take samples from below sea parts of the wall and deemed it to be well indestructible and 100 years plus of life left. Id seen the report with my own eyes as was interested given it being so close to home.

It also was supposedly regularly checked by someone at PD ports and again they deemed it fine for its purpose - they are clearly not bothered abut the state of the top side or crumbling edges in parts - given the main structure is still doing its job.

absolute shame as it could be a nice promenade to walk if made safe and was cleaned up
