Been in the garden all day to day and had Ratboy for company.
After dinner he stretched out on the decking in the pergola in his ‘waiting for business’ mode, basically waiting for anything furry or feathery,.
He stayed frozen in the same pose for over three hours and the wife commented about him just staying in one place, but still he remained frozen sctatchinghead
Going up for tea I called him but he never moved, I used his key words lead and car, nothing!
I stood in front of him and told him to come, but he just looked and when told to come he tried to stand up but couldn’t. I was well alarmed and went to pick him up, but it was like he was stuck to the ground, then I laid on the decking and realised his ID tag on his collar had slipped down the decking gap and twisted round fixing him to the decking. I undid his collar and he sprung out with a look that said ‘about fecking time  ’ He was not impressed

at least there was a happy ending to the story. was getting a bit worried at first and thought it was going to be a repeat story similar to the one we suffered a few weeks back where our rotti/doberman died.

I wonder why he didn’t communicate? Whimper or growl?

We got him when he was a year old, immaculately ‘trained’ the farm way, he regularly sits for long spells watching for ‘opportunities’ and never flinches.

My heart sank when he struggled to get off the ground and feared the worst, but thankfully dark apprehension turned to relief.
So sorry about your dog, Mr A . I’ve cried after losing them but never actually for people, odd isn’t it, but you’ve got to know them to appreciate them.

As a teenager I never saw my father (and his dog) for about 3 years. When I eventually went to live with him the dog recognised me and went absolutely bonkers, up on its hind legs, barking, running round and round, it was a most moving experience and one I’ll never forget.

The dog was a sweet old spaniel, it must have felt like it had lost one of its gang and then been reunited.

dogs can annoy us at times but never intentionally. they do not get on your tits or stab you in the back when you least expect it after pretending to be your best mate or the love of their lives. no wonder dog owners shed tears for their dead pet and can be hard as nails when humans die. i,d put wild animals and birds in the same catogary if you unintentially knock em down driving but somehow i can never feel the same if its a cat even though its someone elses loved pet.

When i lived in norfork i had not been up to the town for a couple of years. our old german shepherd did an absolute loon ripping up a seat belt in anger because i went down tees road and didn,t turn right for the blue lagoon as he expected and wanted. had the sulks all day and was raring for doggy trouble with anything on 4 legs. they never forget if they do not want to.

I think the thing with dogs is 100% loyalty and devotion no matter what happens whereas everyone you have ever met can be a complete contradiction which dogs never are. Their loyalty is unconditional.

Our 2 cats are the best in the world. At least we don't have to put up with them licking your hands, scratting you with their paws or wagging their tails around you like the 3 dogs did when i went to a barbeque last week. Cats rule the roost for me. :)

cats and dogs. bit like vauxhall and ford owners who would not own the others cars. been bitten and cratched too many times myself to get any sort of love for cats. know her in the kitchen wants one but i draw the line on this. saying that i denote to cats rescue but never a single penny to children in need.

At first I thought he had spotted or smelt some thing under the decking and was determined to catch it.

No dog is match for a cat if its cornered. Usually they scoot from dogs but get a cat cornered and watch out.

You’ve obviously never encountered a Black Fell Terrier, as an old lady told me, ‘black as the Devils heart’.
But surprisingly good with kids.

When we got Ratboy he was a year old, lived outdoors in a cage and looked pitiful. He had to adapt to being in a house but oddly enough was perfectly house trained.
Thing is when we checked the vets files he was classed as a fell terrier, Bedlington cross at 75%fell terrier and 25% Bedlington…. Which it turns out is the original recipe so to speak for Patterdales when they needed a bigger dog to kill foxes killing the lambs.
However with the passage of time the Patterdales developed as smaller but determined dogs….while Ratboy’s original cross remained a bigger and bulkier Patterdale, but needs grooming every three months or turns into an Ewok due to the Bedlington influence.
Turns out they’re as rare as hen’s teeth as they’re only bred on farms to the original ‘recipe’ and in demand.
If you’re out in the sticks in the Pennines or Lake District people will approach you to enquire about them, yet to most people they’re just a raggy terrier which is just how I him.
