Just got back from my Co-op where I like to buy the instore bakery bread.

Last Tuesday a Cob was £1.25 - today £1.85

Last Tuesday Tiger bread was £1.10 - today is £1.75

Always check my receipt etc when at home, so just rang store and went onto answer machine.

Are we being made fools of or what?

Stupid thing was milk went down from £1.85 to £1.65.

The price of wheat has gone through the roof, Ukraine was one of the biggest producers in the world not now due to the war forcing prices up.

Like petrol and diesel they can put the price up to what they like as they know people have to get to work.Oil prices tipped to go back up to $100 a barrel currently $80 a barre due to the Saudis and partners cutting back on output.

way things are going people are more likely to expect price rises all the time and might be shocked if they don,t. all these who were stuck in dover going on another holiday cannot be having it that bad. could be a case of the gap between the haves and have nots is growing. never seem to see a waitrose shutting its doors.

Went to our local ASDA last night and checked their Tiger Bloomer whilst I was there(just for you). It is £1.35. I've always found the Co op to be dearer. I can walk to our local Co op but tend to get better value at ASDA or ALDI, both are two miles away. Maybe you should look elsewhere, obviously if you're mobile enough.

some things at the co-op are no dearer than the others. thankfully we have time to go to numerous shops for food including a corner shop who has a few bargains. must be a nightmare for those with limited time and do a big shop at one place therefore missing out on cheaper prices available elsewhere for the same stuff. best thing to do is check the weight of what you do buy as the cheapest can work out the dearest if you do not search for that.

Absolutely it is best to shop around if you can. Our Co op is relatively new to the area and is not that big but the general consensus of opinion is that it is expensive but they do have offers. The trouble is knowing when the offers are on. Going to the shops almost every day as our mothers and grandmothers did is a thing of the past, but it kept them in the loop and got them out of the house. During the school holidays running messages was a daily occurrence for me and not just for me mam. She used to "lend" me out to our neighbours. "Call and see if Mrs so and so needs anything"

the relatively new one in haworth is more expensive than the one thats been around for years in the less upmarket village of denholme. makes you wonder doesn,t it as they are less than 3 miles apart. you can guess the one we swerve.

Buying brand names must be a big no no now, Heinz Beans at £1.40, Aldi Bramwell Beans 47p. I bought Heinz in December £1.20, 2 years ago just over 60p how can Heinz justify the price rise plus Aldi beans come tops on a food survey for quality.

The Co-op do a 5 for £6 freezer offer and the products (normally Birds Eye) change about every 3/4 weeks. That is good value and you save upwards of £5/6.

I also like using my local (smallish) store because it's never too busy and with Covid still about I feel safer in there, not bumping into or getting too close to other shoppers.

I also have a divi card which does pay out yearly of about £30.

They are still good shot stoppers though and can help to dominate a box.

Another topic moved from Prices to Condoms? It's a wonderful forum.

When 18 I dated a girl whose Mother owned a "Drug Store" - years ago it meant like a chemist except she didn't dispense prescriptiopns. She was dating the Chief Salesman of the London Rubber Company (based in Walthamstow where I was born and lived in) who were the manufacturers of Durex.

I remember one evening we had been out for a meal, all 4 of us, and when it was time to drive back the Durex man (can't even remember his name) owned a Bristol car and can't remember what make and wanted to race me home. I had a Mark 1 Cortina GT and during this "race" he blew up the engine of the Bristol. Didn't I laugh but these were the stupid things you did in your youth and at that time, back end of the 60's, there was very little traffic on the roads.

While i was working for a pub chain the LRC rep would often come to meet the Regional Manager (RM) to promote the products.
Would you believe the rep was a very attractive young woman. When speaking to the RM she was once sat with her back to a door facing the RM taking the "products" out of the packets demonstrating their elasticity. A group of us were looking through the window in the door making various gestures.
I somehow dont think you would get away with it now

Bit like when I worked for Greens of Brighton (Cake Mixes incl Cheesecake & Quick Jel) I had a good customer in Bury St. Edmunds which was a discount offshoot of the Co-op, called Leos. I knew the Manager well and he told me the story of a rep selling dog meat telling him how good it was, then opened a tin and started eating it - aarh!!

Not seen any of those for years, even though our house was directly opposite the Avenue Road dairy

The dividend points are swiped on your card (looks like a credit card) after completion of your sale. The rate of return varies slightly and it reflects the profitability of the Tamworth Co-op, a small regionalised co-op that has about 10 branches. It pays out every May but roughly equates to 2p for every £1 spent.

The strange is though that it is in a affluent area but you still have to put a £1 coin in your trolley, I think it is the only supermarket in the area that requires this. We have 3 Aldis, 2 Lidls, 2 Morrisons, 1 Sainsburys, 1 Asda & 3 small Tescos so quite a variety.

Save a load of money by registering for Olio in your locality - their food heroes will save you pounds & bakery products are in plentiful supply. Cucumbers, which were sparse only a few weeks ago, are now being given away by the box-load

its not just food prices that are being hiked up. old stock car parts are as bad where a few years back rear brake pads were under 20 quid a set. the other day they were 55 for the same make from the same supplier. could have got chinese ones cheaper but i want to stop after braking more than twice.

Why shouldn’t supermarkets have a windfall tax on their profits, ok they don’t make the same vast profits as oil and gas producers but they make millions in profits of the back of increased food prices. Supermarkets don’t have the same costs as it does to maintain an oil and gas industry, once a store is opened there is very little maintenance involved apart fro the utility bills.

I'm not sure supermarkets are making massive increases in profit from the increased prices though. Quick Google found this report from Reuters for the 6 months to Oct 2022.

PRICE POSITION
Tesco said it now expects retail adjusted operating profit in its 2022-2023 financial year of £2.4-2.5 billion ($2.7-$2.9 billion). It had previously forecast £2.4-2.6 billion, down from the 2.65 billion made in 2021-22.

First-half retail adjusted operating profit was £1.248 billion - down 10% from a pandemic-boosted £1.386 billion last year, and a fraction below analysts' average forecast of 1.251 billion pounds.

It would be interesting to see if the basket of products that is used to calculate our inflation rate contains "old stock car parts". If so underlying inflation may be only 4% and not 10% as currently quoted.
If so i stand corrected and congratulate the government of gettings control of inflation.

always wonder if those who buy it and eat it can actually tell the difference in taste from that rip off joint to the one you could buy on stockton market for a fraction of that price. bet their shit smells the same as mine does and thats where it eventually ends up.
