The majority of the U.K. fruit and veg this time of year is imported as due to the winter period here we can’t grow any. The reason for the increase was a poor harvest in Spain and Morocco due to the weather, genuinely it was forcing prices up.
I can’t see prices coming down when the produce becomes available in the U.K. as farmers have stopped planting them because they can’t get the staff to pick them.
Apple farmers in Kent are digging up their orchards in the face of stagnant returns on the fruit.
Input prices - which include picking, energy, haulage and packaging - have risen 23%, while the amount supermarkets pay growers for their produce has increased 0.8% year-on-year.
The supermarkets just screw the U.K. producers threatening to buy their produce abroad unless they agree to sell.

Whilst down the town yesterday, I popped into the small Morrisons and they were selling short dated Spanish Clementines 600g pack for 38p instead of £1.49.
Nothing wrong with them and as I like these easy peelers I bought 6 packs (there were plenty there for everyone who wanted some).
There are some offers out there but generally the prices of all food has rocketed more than necessary and someone is making a buck or two.

Same as the price of a bag of chips used to go up when new potatoes came into season, they never went down again.

and then they go onto screw us with the buying power they have. be interesting how much their prifits have gone up like the energy companies have. whether its aldi or waitrose you go to its still a supermarket and like buying fuel they have more or less a monopoly on it.

Tesco said it now expected a retail adjusted operating profit of between £2.4 billion and £2.5bn for the 2022-2023 financial year, having previously forecast a profit of between £2.4bn to £2.6bn.
That is down from the £2.65bn it made in the 2021-2022 financial year.

Shocking that supermarkets are making billions of the back of increased prices, no wonder inflation is running at over 10% and the government wonder why people want a pay increase ?

if only we could do something about this situation as individuals it would not feel as bad. its a monopoly without it being one as there is only another supermarket to visit who will be making similar profits as the rest. they are in it for themselves and shareholders not for customers.
