I really can't believe that it's 40 years since we travelled South and evicted the Argies. The youngest of us are not far of 60 and the senior ranks and high ranking officers are 80 odd. I'm off to several events in the next week, the biggest being Tuesday at the National Arboretum. Rumour has it that the Queen is turning out. (not for me I hasten to add!)

despite the timescale, not a day goes past.....

RIP all those we left in the snow, the mud and the sea.

R I P to all 255 of them. I think that was the number of lives lost.

When you all meet this week John, see if you can get a squad together and go sort Putin out.

Its etched in my memory although i took no part in it in any way.
I was taking part in my final profession exams which were always at the end of May. Every day i watched the TV and every morning of the exams i would listen to McDonald (?) give another update which often gave bad news.
I felt quite guilty and inadequate that i was worried about something at trivial like taking exams.
I attended the exams with zero worry or concern knowing far great thing were happening elsewhere.
I recall seeing some being physically sick in the toilets and i thought you pathetic twats.
Totally composed i sailed through them.

RIP the 255 and great respect to all others injured both physically and mentally during this conflict.

I was plotting charts then …in the North Sea. Remember when they finally gave in, in the middle of the channel going to Boulogne…lovely morning.

255 is correct. along with the three Falkland ladies who died when a shell landed on their house. Doreen Bonner, Sue Whitley and Mary Godwin.
255 in the fighting and PTSD suicides since the war is in excess of 300.

we should also mention the 1000 dead Argentines including 323 on the Belgrano.

mr I :
Firstly thank you for your service and I was horrified to hear how many suicides have happened since the conflict it is shocking and we as a country should look after our forces personnel a lot better for the sacrifices they have made for us all. May your fallen colleagues rest in peace.

It saved Thatchers political career, was the sacrifice of lives worth it for a group of islands in the South Atlantic ?

All wars are about politics, politics has cost the unnecessary loss of life of millions of servicemen as it has done for hundreds of years, I have the greatest respect for all the servicemen who lost their lives over the years. It’s not like the old days when the leaders used to head the armies in the battle field, they are sat in comfy offices now. When you see the smiling faces of the army personnel boarding ships and trains in the First World probably not knowing the majority would not be coming back either the killed but the enemy or by their own for not obeying orders brings it home to me.

It’s called ‘Realpolitik’ it’s what happens.
No one in their right mind goes to war for a ‘jolly jaunt’.
Argentine Facist military junta with appalling human rights record invades innocuous islands to divert populations attention away from dire economic outlook at home in Argentina and they fall for it….. till it falls apart. Junta then deposed, truth of their internal repression and killings in Argentina revealed to world.

Thatcher didn’t invade the islands.

The way some people react, you’d think she did.

Condolences to all those who lost family members and comrades. Warm wishes and respect to those still struggling with their memories of the conflict.
