I've got a laptop that I'm trying to sort out. I think it's a hardware issue but I'd welcome a second opinion.

Every time it's shut down or goes into standby it won't boot and I have to use system restore to get it running again. Boots into safe mode fine incidentally.

Done a complete format and reinstall action several times.
Downgraded from W10 to W8.1 but same issue.

I'm suspecting a video card issue as it sometimes boots into a dodgy screen. The sort of thing you get when a monitor isn't plugged in correctly.

Any alternative theories?

SSD or Mechanical drive ? Check for bad sectors if its mechanical. Depending on brand of hardrive they usually have some tool to download that will check integrity of drive

Been there mate. I believe I've solved it. I deleted the Intel video card driver and reinstalled windows. I then used the basic windows graphics driver and turned off windows update. It's been fine ever since. I like you though HD and I did a number of scans in a dos window (haven't typed chkdsk /f in many a long year!)

When I first read the above, thought it may have been the master boot record had become corrupted. But with you doing a reinstall it would have been new. Glad it’s been sorted.

My fix worked but now hasn't. Fine for a full day the this morning its back to square one.

Given the laptop last been full formatted several times, including a deletion and recreation of partitions, and two versions of windows installed separately and in both cases its got to be a hardware failure - probably in the graphics area as the drive seems fine.

If it was an issue with the GPU itself, your initial fix should have worked. Plus the issues would carry on into safe mode.

With it being a boot issue, I'd check nothing's went wrong with the BIOS.

As ziggy says, maybe removing the MB battery will reset the bios.

You can also try updating the BIOS, though that can go very wrong if you arse it up. So be careful.
