I just think it cheapens records when players get international caps after coming on for final few minutes. To night with England winning 3 and then 4 nil and with just minutes to go Henderson,Lingard and Saka were brought on and win caps.

Know what you mean, but it's impossible to relate the number of caps players like Kane will pick up in their careers with olden times (like when Lineker was an England player) because of the sheer number of games played now in bloated international tournaments.

England's current World Cup group includes Andorra and San Marino FFS. A League 2 representative side would have no trouble seeing them off. Sterry for England!

I doubt it very much. Does a manager have to consider this when making substitutions for tactical reasons, of course not. It’s just an unfortunate coincidence of the system and practicality clashing. Does it really offend anyone.....?

its just the system of all these international games. not the players faults. getting even 50 caps used to be a real achievment for top class players. now if you hang around for a few seasons it becomes quite easy to get that and go on for your 100. we are certainly not the worst international football country where players gain far more caps than their ability is.

The thing is, years ago there were no subs so a cap had more value as regards a players time on the field, with the number of subs now allowed it’s devalued them in that sense but the world changes.

sctatchinghead Only 9 English players have ever made it to 100 caps and none of them are currently still playing. Not sure who these players are picking up a cheap 100 caps

well raheem sterling has at 26 just about reached his peak years in the game. 69 caps already. rate him or not there is a good chance of him doubling that amount with all the internationals now being played.

The cap system is a poor barometer to acknowledge players talent anyway. Most the highest capped players are asian strikers like Ali Daei, Ali Ashfaq and Sunil Chhetri, doubt either of them could be considered world class.

Meanwhile you have the likes of Mauro Icardi with a ridiculously low number of caps.

well we need to sign someone from moldova, san marino or andorra to get the first pools player with more caps than pools appearances for a couple of seasons.

I love how the very second Trevor Carson signed for Motherwell he got a N. Ireland call up. A year or so after we signed David Edgar, he was in Canada's squad yet I don't think he played for them while under contract here. Did Liam Donnelly get into that N Ireland squad while here or just youths?

Zaine Francis-Angol is eligible for Antigua & Barbuda, surely he'll get a call up playing in league two?

Donnelly was captain of the N Ireland U-21s while he was with us and spent a fair amount of time away on international duty.
