As the Mail launch another page filler of players who've left in the past month. How about a look back at the players that were in the squad for the season Pools were relegated. Where are those who jumped over board and how have their careers gone since?

I've not got time for all of them but here is the starter list, along with where I believe they are currently:

Nicky Featherstone - Has become Pools only remaining player from that season. Much improved!
Trevor Carson - Just signed for Dundee
Scott Harrison - No club..
Carl Magnay - Ditched us for Spennymor and another job.
Michael Woods - Ditched us for Harrogate then moved to Dover.. we know how that went. York?
L Hawkins - Now at Whitby enjoying fish and chips.
Lewis Allesandra - Ditched us for Notts County, who ditched him. Last reported at Carlisle.
Padraig Amond - Star man for Newport after he left us. Still there.
Rhys Oates - Been and gone. Now at Mansfield.
Connor Simpson - playing in Iceland
Matthew Bates - Whereabouts unknown..
Nicky Deverdics - Dover, Wrexham, Gateshead. Now at Blyth..
Jordan Richards - non league
Connor Smith - non league
L Rooney - Truro
Billy Paynter - now a coach at Port Vale
Devante Rodney - Signed for Salford, loaned to Halifax. Now at Port Vale. Was 2 minutes away from keeping us in the League.
Toto Nsiala - Sold to Shrewsbury, cash got Coxalled. Now at Ipswich
Jake Carrol - Jumped ship in Jan 2017.. Cambridge
Nathan Thomas - Left May 2017, big move to Sheff Utd. then sank and is now at Hamilton..

Here's the reference for the season -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%8 ... .C._season

I'd say we've not seen any stars of the future. Nsiala is about the highest playing member of the relegation season.
Yes, slow day at work...

Good article trevwoody. Just a couple of updates I know of. Jake Carrol is now with Motherwell and Nathan Thomas has left Hamilton and without a club (what a waste of a prospective talent).

Interesting list, definitely some decent players in there like Nsiala, Carson and Thomas. Josh Laurent has also done fairly decent as well, now at Reading. Kenton Richardson is at Sunderland, yet only plays for the U23s.

You could argue that squad on paper was better than the year before, and certainly better than the year after. Which goes an awful long way to show just how inept Dave Jones was.

I'd erased Dave Jones from my memory until that post;

Sorry, but watching those run in performances at the end of thatseason was diabolical. We could have stayed up, but they couldn’t be arsed when the season could be rescued.

It's a bit harsh to talk about players jumping ship or ditching Pools in a season when Coxberg were systematically running a good club into the ground behind the scenes.

On the pitch it was a weird season from the start. Craig Hignett had assembled a good squad - compared with our current lack of strikers, Pools had Amond, Allessandra and Thomas. It's sobering to think that they scored 32 league and cup goals between them and we still got relegated!

Pools were still in mid-table in late November and after that the wheels really came off. By Christmas Pools were hovering above the drop zone, in January Hignett left and Nsiala, Carrol and Laurent were all flogged off.

Dave Jones was a disastrous appointment but in hindsight I think Hignett failed to get the best out of his players in the early part of the season. He may be a decent coach but he's not much of a motivator - we saw that in his second spell too.

A few others who played a decent number of games who you didn't mention were Brad Walker and Liam Donnelly. Brad's yet another ex-Poolie who's at Port Vale this season and Donnelly's still at Motherwell.

All the stats for season 2016/2017 are at http://www.inthemadcrowd.co.uk/UI/Seaso ... id=2016/17

Donnelly doesn't seem to of set the world alight in Motherwell, seem to remember the Mail (big shock) linking him with championship sides.

As for Kieran Green, largely unremarkable career except the fact he scored against us at Halifax last season. At this point, I'm sure if an opposition team signed H'angus he'd score against us!!

well for me a lot of those players were not all that bad. in fact some were good. if morbedly obese jones had not arrived at the vic we should have stayed up. think even a bang average manager could have got us a handful of extra points to keep us up. this showed with the improvement even bates managed. i,ll never forgive jones and those in charge of the club to my dying day. pools were not complete shit like some who have dropped out of the league in the past.

Fair comment - there are plenty of players that moved on before the proverbial hit the fan for Pools. Swindon are currently going through it and there are certainly others that are suffering similar this summer.

Looking at the progress that year, we were indeed safe for most of it and just happened to go on a disastrous run as the spine of the team got sold or moved to allow them to keep getting paid. Most of us would take the same route to keep the bailiffs from the door.

I'm really thankful I've still got a club to go and see.

Donnelly had a bad knee injury. He started 2019/20 in fine form which is why he was linked with bigger clubs. Just had a look at his stats that year and he scored 11 in 29 games before the injury which has kept him out since.

Always makes me laugh that SPL sides pick up Pools players though. Much better shop window though. I think Kabamba even got a DR Congo call up. Would never have happened if he had stated in National League

If history is anything to go by, he'll be prolific for the first 5 or so matches, and then the goals will dry up.

From around that time, maybe not in the 2017 squad exactly there are 4 ex-poolies at York City. Michael Duckworth, Michael Woods [yes indeed] Paddy Mclaughlin and [spit] Jake Cassidy!

Certainly a lot of them playing in the National League North, Deverdics, Harrison (released now), Magnay and Jason Kennedy.

Most of those were first team players, the fact that almost all of them immediately dropped a division shows just how bad we were.

or better re visit it after 35/6 games time to give us a better take on things. looking at even the league table after 5/6 games is totally pointless. i never know why they even bother putting one up especially after one game.

Not sure but if you look at Barrow last season they had a torrid run for about 10 games. Then fortunes soon changed after that, guessing their money came about then. Yep surely Raj could spend a few and get it back when it comes through.

Also just watched yesterdays highlights. Feck me …. Looked completely off the pace. Tired legs … bad passing…. Their 3rd and 4th goals where gifted and we looked like the NLN side for most. Killip again not good enough. Their second goal he watched it in. Really need a better GK. Dan Bramall (goal scorer for us). Got praise from Gateshead and our commentary team and looked lively. Still need a towering menace of a CF though

This is true. Pools out of any position dont usually fall short at the goalkeeper. Historically we have always had a good shot stopper. Shame Dimi wasnt the same when he was given a chance again as was hoping for a Buffon moment from him.
NM thats both ends of the pitch that needs major work. In DC we trust !

Was about to post something like that. We lost yesterday with Killip, we didn't win any of the playoff games with him.

But as you said, Mitch Beaney was terrifying, yet even he was decent compared to Scott Loach.

Is my mind playing tricks but in his two seasons my recollection of Loach was he was supporters player of the year one season and players player of the year in his second season.

He was very highly rated. The reverse Scott Flinders, who was half decent yet routinely got dogs abuse and was never rated.

Flinders is now in league 1, Loach is in the National League.

Personally I thought they were about equal. Good lower league goalkeepers, yes they had their weaknesses but both have had good lower league careers. Yes and still playing.

Already howked when Paddy McLaughlin's name was mentioned. Best not play any more friendlies with York while he's still there.

all three had one thing in common, you were constantly waiting for a cock up by them even when it never happened. typical lower league keepers who make a world class save and in the next attack they are at fault for the goal.

Will never ever understand McLaughlin's problem. Was at a higher level than he was used to, getting first team minutes, yet obviously had a huge problem with something trivial.

A real shame Challinor wasn't manager at the time, I'm sure he'd of ripped the spiteful little c.unt a new one.
