"Hartlepool United have completed the signing of former Sunderland midfielder Martin Smith.

The 25 year-old spent the end of last season at Chesterfield, having previously played for Chorley and Salford.

He joins on a permanent deal, becoming Pools second signing."

Don't know why Smith left Chesterfield, But he was on thier retained list as seen below.

was that the furlough or retained list.

Saw him being interviewed on the BBC and appeared quite pleased with move he said everything just lined up for him being a local lad.
