My car isn't running like normal.

When it's idling at traffic lights etc. it 'chugs', and the rev counter doesn't rest in the same place like normal. It fluctuates a bit every five seconds or so.

Also, until the engine has warmed up fully and I'm approaching roundabouts etc, I put the clutch in to gear down, and it will cut out. This has always happened to it but only in very cold weather. It's been doing it in the last couple of weeks when its been far from cold.

Any ideas?

It's a ten year old mark 3 Golf, 1.4 injection, done 100,000 miles.

My guess would be a fuel problem, possibly a dodgy injector or two or even the fuel pump. Definitely sounds fuel orientated to me. That said, is it ok when its warmed up because that would point away from fuel supply?

mine was having the same rev problem when idle-ing at traffic lights etc.

Bought a bottle of this cost about 15 quid, pour it into your fuel tank and hey presto good as new!!

It doesn't cut out when it's warmed up, but chugs when idling all the time.

had a Rover which did the same thing which was a nightmare when you got to a roundabout and it cut out and the power steering died as well! Anyway, replaced the oxygen sensor which sorted it for a few months then it started over again so got shot of the car!

One of two things Mr Nottingham, either your throttle body is coked up (very common on that engine) and will need to be cleaned and 'adapted', or your coolant temperature sensor is telling the cars ecu (its brain!) that the engine is running hot, and to therefore 'weaken' the fuel / air mixture, when in actual fact the car is cold and needs a 'richer' mixture..

Either way its an inexpensive repair (if you know me!! ) but the smart money is on a dirty throttle body.

PM me if you need any advice

all bodies which have been throttled end up dirty
