I trust that we will now see the end of pathetic awards for singers and people running round and round. Knighthoods for the likes of the vacuous Branson, the civil servants who get the awards purely down to time in the job rather than outstanding performance. Maybe finally we will see awards going to people who deserve them.

Mr I, I think there are going to be a tonne of things people will want to change. I also think there's not a cat in hell's chance of it happening.

It would be very sad if there wasn't some social realignment after all this. At the very lease people have seen where the real value in society is.

Hopefully one day they will scrap it , but I doubt it,( it would take a real Labour government for that to happen ) its a reward for doing your duty and not rocking the boat old boy.

Even those that do deserve it, don't see why you should be given a peerage for doing your job properly and going the extra mile, that should be what all decent people aspire to. The names of the real heroes in life will get talked about a long time after they have gone , that to is real recognition , I doubt many will remember the names of the sycophants these days , who receive honours , handed out like confetti.

If we have to have awards I'd like to see them going to volunteers within the community. People who give up their time for the benefit of others, freely and without pay, reward etc..
I'd scrap the House of Lords tomorrow.

What would you have as a second House Mr Derwent? One with a real power of veto like everywhere else?
Political parties allowed or prohibited? Would the parties even entertain the thought of not bossing that house too?
Or just don't replace it and let the H of C go unchecked?

I would have to study that one, Monty.
What I would say is that If I had my way it would be an elected body and would have clout because if it didn't have teeth then I'm not sure it would have purpose. All that is off the top of my head and without study of the options etc.
Best I can do mate, hope it helps.

This is why I’m ambivalent about Lords reform. Having a bunch of politicians outside of elections allows them to be more independent of the political process and less partisan. It leads to a better scrutiny process of Acts of parliament, and they can only delay Bills. But they only get there due to political patronage and there’s sod all we can do, as an electorate, to get rid of them. But we definitely need a second chamber. I’d probably prefer a second chamber based on a loose PR process, but it’s not the most important constitutional change, for me.

Other countries have senates or even the public (in the form of referenda) as their vetoing chamber. I certainly don't know of any other House of Chums and Toffs.

Agree , and our judicial system , grown men wearing wigs etc, If the opening of parliament , trooping the colour and last night of the proms took place in Tehran we would be laughing at them.

Hey, leave the promenade concerts alone! It's one of the few things that separates Britons from the savages.
